These environments are waiting for the spark that will cause fights or force people to close up shop and lock their doors. Residents either take to the streets to get a feel for what is happening, drawn there by some unconscious sense of uncertainty or angst, or remain inside while feeling nervous for reasons they can’t explain. Violence is not evident yet, but it wouldn’t take much to cause it. Locals’ response to outsiders depends on the individuals; generally, the populace is unlikely to be antagonistic toward individual outsiders just for being there.
Description
The "main drag" of the bizarre little area that is South Beach, shipping comes and goes at all hours of the night on the concrete piers and docks that line the shorelines. There's not really places for sandy beaches, unless you jump down a good long way and move underneath the piers that jut out into the ocean. It's not intended for tourists or sight seeing. It's grimy and smells of fish and shipping oil and fuel.
One can see the little dotting island and the 24-hour Compton Seafood Processing and Canning Facility in the distance from the land-side and cargo ships make their way to and fro at all hours of the day and night, providing a steady income to the whiskey bars dotting the coast. Coast Guard patrols are semi-frequent, at least near the shipping docks. There are some homes and establishments that are tucked a little bit off of the main drag, down sidestreets that stretch blocks away from the actual coast.
Everything with an exterior feels salty, like the mists from the ocean just coat and won't let go.
