Background

They say money can't buy every thing. They're wrong, of course. Money can buy any thing you want, it's just the matter of getting money. That's how Jason and I hooked up. It was the 17th of April, 1969. You know that song about the summer of '69? Yeah, those were good times. Anyways, back to Jason. Jason was a natural con. He spent his nights down at The Cue Ball, sharking any one that hadn't been around enough to know better than to play with him. Or those who were too drunk to care. I met Jason after I lost twenty dollars to him. You see, Jason had skills but he lacked imagination. I had imagination. Why sit around skimming twenties all night when you could be doing better? That's right. We were going professional. The problem though, is when you go professional every one else is a shark too. This is where I came in. Someone had to equalize the playing field, so to say.

I was the distraction. Oh sure, sometimes I actually was the distraction, but more often than not I had other things set up. You know, it's awfully hard to concentrate on pool when your wife is divorcing you because she found those awful pictures of you doing coke off a whore's ass. Okay, so maybe it was always that bad (although that was a rather crowning glory) but everyone has secrets. Secrets that throw them off their game.

Really, it wasn't even Jason's playing that drew attention to us. It was my fault completely. How was I to know that the investigator I hired was already "working" for someone else? Anyways, out money making scheme came to a quick end when Jason "jumped" off the top of a Vegas hotel. The police said he was high, and he probably was. But we both know he was pushed. Both of us being me and the scumbag who sired me. Yeah, apparently he wanted a new flavor of the week. It was great, for the first year. He cooed over me, he told me how clever I was. He told me he loved me. What girl hasn't heard that before? But soon enough, someone else came along who was more clever, more beautiful, and more cruel. He loved her then.

I had enough of Vegas about the time he took my ghoul and gave it to her. I figured it was me or her, and she had him on her side. So I skipped town, went south to Reno. Reno sucked. Mostly because they chased me out as soon as they realized I was a "worthless nomad vagrant." Since I am clever, maybe not as clever as Janie, I decided the way to avoid this is to avoid being a vagrant. Nomad, well nothing I can do about that. So the next city I popped into - Nashville... ever notice there's not a lot between Vegas and Nashville, at least, not a lot of party. Anyways, there I applied to the best option I had. The Invictus. I figure if you're going to be a bloodsucking asshole, you better be the top asshole.

So there I am, doing the Invictus thing, and damn if that didn't take forever. When I was finally in, I figured it'd be just like a scam. Hustle some people and make your way up the ladder until you're playing tournaments. I come to find out that blackmail doesn't work so well with Kindred. Or rather, it works really damn well but you had better know how to apply it. Yep, I failed that lesson. So now Nashville is a little unfriendly, and down to the south I go. Atlanta is supposed to be fun.
