Vasily
The Lineage

Known Facts

  • Petrovich is a Mekhet member of the Carthian Movement with direct ties to the Russian mafia.
  • For those few with deep knowledge of the Underworld in Las Vegas, he has a strong reputation as a "cleaner", a service that he also provides to other Kindred, no questions asked, to clean up "little messes".
  • Arrived in Las Vegas with his childe Nikolay Turov in the late 1980's, from Russia, by way of New York.
  • Speaks Russian and English (although with a thick Russian accent).
  • Has some very eccentric mannerisms and 'taboos', such as never letting his bare feet touch the floor and an aversion to birds and feathers.

Present Affiliations

This Section is considered Out of Character information unless you are involved in the story lines discussed.

  • The Invictus
    • Nathaniel Sanders
      • The Prince represents everything to be abhored in society - authoritative and fuedal. But what really bothers Vasily most is that other than that, Nathaniel has basically been an effective leader and has given him little to brood or rail against and that other an obvious idealogical differences, he has has little to actually complain about. Actually, he can be downright infuriatingly reasonable and his temper just means he's human.
    • Violet Townsend
      • Vasily has had little do to with Townsend, beyond the barest mutual acknowledgements at social functions. They travel in different circles, and he prefers it that way. Beyond that, he finds her "out of touch".
    • Cat Fairmont
      • Vasily is unsure how to take Cat. On one hand, she is Invictus and prone to making the odd snide comment about him, but she is generally approachable and even "fun" to be around. He knows that she is willing to get her hands dirty and "play in the mud" which is very respectable to Vasily.
  • The Carthian Movement
    • Cha
      • Vasily holds much respect for 'Cha' for "holding down the fort" in Las Vegas, in spite of a Invictus stranglehold on the city. The fact that, as "Hound" she is part of the "Establishment", is greatly offset by her dedication to the Movement and her help in getting the Russians squared away when they arrived in Las Vegas. But beyond that, on a personal level, he also loathes her as crude, violent, and cowardly. The ambush has tainted his views on her greatly. Still, he knows that for the betterment of the Movement, he must push past that.
  • The Circle of the Crone
    • Anthony Lazarak
      • The tension between Vasily and Anthony never really dissipated until recently, because of their little mob war, with each blaming the other for instigating it; however respect for his Sire and his faith has gone a long way to smooth things over over the years. Recently, he and 'Toli' have begun to rely on each other a little more. Since the death of Vasily's childe and the absence of Veles, it has become more of the cliche about 'strange bedfellows'.
  • The Unaligned
    • Franco Martinez
      • Franco has a decent head for business and was willing to deal with Vasily - maybe it was some left over ties to his Sire, Cha, but who really cares? Business was business and he seemed to understand that. However, things darked considerably when he and Cha tried to ambush Vasily while Vasily was trying to help the Deava. Vasily makes a point of public letting people know that he 'chose' to spare Franco's life.
    • Kristak
      • Vasily is still unsure why he likes Kristak. They are of different views, ages, and mindsets, but he finds his no bullshit attitude much like his own. While usually not supporting of the idea of an Unaligned holding office, Vasily also knows there are few other than himself prepared for the role - had Vasily will be damned before he would agree to be the law, so better that Kristak takes the mantle.
    • Archibald Jacobson
      • Where once had higher hopes for Archibald, it had been recently replaced by contempt and disgust for the vagrant's self-humiliating ways. Still, Vasily is stubborn and not quite yet willing to give up on his pet project just quite yet.

Description

Although Vasily was just shy of thirty years old when he was embraced, his harsh upbringing and mortal life has made him look as man years older who's haunted gaze has seen many things better left forgotten. He has a disfiguring jagged "Y" shaped scar on his left cheek. His body is covered in a series of 34 prison tattoos, though his tendency to dress in fine dark suits hides most of them except the ones on his hands. Intense grey eyes and slicked back short brown hair, he is sometimes known to sport close-cropped facial hair. Whether it is some mystic property of his blood or merely his disturbingly grim presence, it seems as though others often tend to look the other way - subconsciously refusing to acknowledge his presence.

Current History

  • 1917: Vasily Illya Petrovich was born in Petrograd (formally St. Petersburg, now Leningrad) , Russia to moderately poor family of serfs. Growing up during the dawn of the Oktober Revolution, Vasily was well indoctrinated in early collectivist and socialist rhetoric of Lenin and the stories of the horrors of Tsarist Russia. Although, for all of the rhetoric, doctrine cannot feed an empty belly. Pragmatism led Vasily to find 'shotcuts' to the the food lines - a skill he became rather adept at as a child.
  • 1931-1933: Caught stealing bread at the age of fourteen, Vasily spent three (3) years in a St. Petersburg prison for the theft. It was his first introduction to the vory.
  • 1937-1945: Sent to Siberian gulag for an "indeterminant stay" for murder, but released to serve his sentence in a Spetsnaz convict unit. He served with distinction, including during the Battle of Stalingrad when his unit was sent out on "reconnaissance" missions that were basically suicide charges against fortified German positions, so the Russian commanders could evalute the strengths of a particular German position, since they had no way to recon by air.
  • 1946-1947: Early in '46, after the war, Vasily made his first and ill-fated attempt to immigrate to New York City. The Cold War was just just a twinkle in mad men's eyes at the time, and he had believed it would be a good way to put some distance between an the horrors he had been witness to over the past few years in Europe. Attempting to set-up his own criminal network in the underworld of the 'Rotten Apple', but unknowing 'the lay of the land', Vasily makes one to many wrong moves and quickly draws the attention of a young Invictus Mekhet and his Sire. Drawn to this Russian immigrant - the younger Mekhet for Vasily's ability to quickly adapt and make key contacts and connections within the underworld, the elder Shadow for perhaps their joint Russian heritage - the pair begin to watch, stalk, and eventual court Vasily's interests. Perhaps the horrors of war were still far too fresh in Vasily's psyche, or perhaps his Soviet upbringing could not wrap his mind around the Invictus lifestyle, but when he was taken down embraced and attempted to be brought into the fold by the younger Mekhet, everything went disastrously wrong.
  • 1947-1960: Being a stranger in a strange land is difficult enough, with only a rough command of the language, without also becoming one of the newly living dead in a society that he was ill-prepared to enter. This was compounded by Amerika's growing distrust of all things Russian. His mind and spirit broken, he fled back to Russia, less than two years into his Embrace, stowing away on a container ship. Even back in his homeland, everything seemed foreign to the young vampyre - Lenin's Utopian dream twisted by Stalin and hardened by the approaching Cold War. Yet there was one thing that Vasily knew wouldn't change - the Vor, the criminal underbelly of Russia. Returning to the folds of "his people", Vasily was quickly recruited by the Carthians of the Soviet state. Within the ranks of the Vory he was home again. More importantly, with the aid of his vampiric abilities, he was powerful... although not alone.
  • 1960: Vasily had been watching the mortal Vor, Nikolay Turov, from the shadows for a couple of years now. They had first met after the younger's release from the Magadan prison camp in Siberia (the very same gulag Vasily was imprisoned in) six years prior. Nikolay had shown himself to be very intelligent and politically savvy. When word reached his ears that a rival Nosferatu Vor was interested in Nikolay's skills, Vasily acted quickly to swoop in and make him his own.
  • 1986: As the Cold War draws to a close and the Iron Curtain falls, Vasily and Nikolay Turov arrive in North America, landing in New York City (the city of Vasily's embrace and brief sojurn forty years ago. The move is prompted by a desire to finally track down Vasily's kindred relations. Unable to to find them in NYC, and finding almost impossible to crack into the underbelly of such a long-defined city, Vasily stagnates. Still, for almost five years, the pair made the 'Rotten Apple' their home before finally conceding NYC was a lost cause and continued westward.
  • 1991: Came to Las Vegas from New York City in an effort establish themselves, strengthen the Movement, and track down Kindred relations. The first that Vasily discovered was James Stuart, the child of his Sire's sibling, and like most of his relatives, frustratingly [Invictus]]. The only upside was that this led him to his Grandsire, Natasha Danilov, now residing in Los Angeles. One of the other first kindred the pair met on their arrival was the fellow Carthian, Cha. She made sure that they we filled in on the lay of the land: The Laws of the city, the best places to hunt, a basic "Who's Who" and history of the city, and assistance in getting Acknowledged - all, suprisingly for no cost, as a fellow Carthian - a fact that Vasily has not forgotten, despite their differences.
    • The first sign of Vasily's arrival felt in the underworld of Las Vegas was the arrival of 'The Borzoi', an enigmatic underworld figure with a reputation as a very thorough "cleaner" (one of the best in the business), and if the price was right, an occasional contract killer. In the tense world of a city's mortal underbelly, an effective outsider can made quite the name for himself wehen you need to take out one of your own without it blowing back on you. Who the Borzoi really is a matter of rumour and conjecture, as those rare few who have seen his face all report completely different descriptions. Within a few years, word began to trickle into Kindred circles that the 'Borzoi' was Kindred and for a fee, would clean-up "hunting accidents" and "small mistakes" with complete discretion - no questions asked. His identity hidden, the only reliable known method of contact was via a cell number that quietly has made the rounds.
    • One of the first orders of business for Vasily and his childe was to set up a base of operations. In keeping with the Vory Code, this meant the creation of a communal haven, in addition to any boltholes they would need. The pair scoured the the city looking for an ideal location close to a suitable feeding area that could also be easily overlooked from prying eyes. It took several weeks before they found the ideal place on the outskirts of the city.
    • Vasily's method of digging in so deeply into Las Vegas' underworld was not to go after the big obvious jewels, the casinos, but instead to go after what he refers to as 'support services' - all of the other little unseemly scams and dealings that keep the underbelly humming - travel package scams, insurance scams, extortion, smuggling contraband, white slavery, protection rackets, workers unions, number running and off-site betting. Vasily's gamble was simple - Kindred, particularly the Invictus, would rather 'be lookink at the art on the walls than the staff in the halls'. Vasily was right. Slowly over the next decade, he had managed to stick enough fingers in enough smaller pies that his pull in the underworld has began to rival some of the major players in what Las Vegas is famous for - all the while standing in the shadows.
  • 1992: As Vasily began to entrench himself deeper into the seedy underbelly of Las Vegas, he began to chip away at some of the less obvious interests of the Invictus and other citizens. Michelle Costillo began to notice the subtle shifts in power. When Vasily made an uncharacteristic mistake, one that would have exposed his dealings to the Invictus controlling the majority of the underworld, Michelle stepped in and took care of the witness and evidence. For her efforts and silence in the matter, Vasily was obligated to owe her a large boon and his word that he would try to steer clear of her sire's underworld assets. A year later, he was able to repay her buy helping her acquire and train a highly trained ghoul, and since then, seems to have gone out of his way to avoid clashing with Cha and her own pull in the underworld, as if there were actually some honour among thieves.
  • 1995: Vasily catches wind that some gang heat being directed at Cha is about to spill over on her childe, Michelle Costillo. While he had the option of warning her beforehand, he realized the greater profit to be had in letting it happen and pulling her ass out of the fire. Following her unseen, he came across a rival gang ready to rip her a new one as a message to Cha, and quietly waited to for her to stumble into their trap. Once they had her surrounded and had gotten a few licks in on her, he stepped out from the shadows and called her attackers out, mocking and taunting them. Sure enough, taking the bait, he lead them on a merry goose chase through some of the back alleys of Vegas before ditching them, giving Costillo ample time to escape. It was a few nights later that he confronted Costillo and extracted a large boon from her begrudgingly, which he almost immediately called in to have her acquire a Crassus ghoul similar to the one he trained for her. He know that she probably thinks it was a set-up, but seems to have no desire to explain, since she is partial right anyways.
  • 1996: After seeing the Carthians temporarily endangered by the attack on Cha and the near-miss on Michelle Costillo, Vasily realized that there was a dire need within the Movement, and in the city as a whole. With his limited battlefield surgery skills, and taking a page from mob doctors and back-alley abortionists, along with pilfered medical texts, he immersed himself in the study of medicine - specifically surgery. While his methods may seem crude and somewhat basic, they are, none the less, effective. Patching up the occasional gangster who would rather not have to explain the nature of his injuries to hospital staff who may be bound to report them, Vasily begins to slowly garner more favours within the city's underworld - becoming the "go-to guy" to take care of "little problems". Slowly, word begins to leak out into the right Kindred circles, that Las Vegas has it's own Night Doctor. Vasily might not be the best in the business, but in a pinch, his discretion more than makes up for it, although he never admits to being the Doctor - just a contact point for the service. "Da. I am knowink a guy who can be takink care of that nasty wound."
  • 1999: Sensing a shift in the winds of fortune and desiring to consolidate his power, Vasily swallowed his pride and petitioned Nathaniel Sanders for permission to embrace after demonstrating that he would be able personally take care of another mouth to feed, without greatly impacting the city. To his slight surprise, permission was granted and Vasily wasted no time in embracing, Peter Jones, the ghoul that Michelle Costillo had found for him a few years prior.

2002: Vasily was contacted by Grayson Lazarak to get him in touch with "Doctor M.". The Savage had suffered some fairly serious wounds that he apparently did not want made known. Arrangements were made to have him patched up, with complete discretion - no questions were asked by either party. As a result, the '"Doctor", through his agent Vasily' requested a pair of ghouls be found for him.

  • 2004: Vasily had hit a wall in advancing his underworld ties. Too new even after 13 years, his thick accent targeted him as a foreigner, and nibbling viciously on the outside can still only get you so far without plunging the knife into the middle of the roast. Afraid that control of the underworld would slip into 'unfriendly' hands and looking for a way to solidify the Carthians, he and Nikolay came up with a plan to kill a few birds with one stone. The Russians used their combined pull to remove the final barriers from preventing Cha from taking over complete control of the underworld. The thought being that is it couldn't be one of us, then it would be one of "us". This cooperation turned out to be a defining point in the Carthian Movement in Las Vegas as they had now at least begun to seriously start working together on more long range plans of mutual benefit to the Movement. In acknowledging their help, she began to open up to the idea of allowing them to help her manage and protect Carthian interests in South Las Vegas. She also helped to train some "muscle", specifically a rather skilled 'Bull', for Vasily to make the task a little easier.
  • 2005: Ephemeral Deville found herself in a spot of trouble, with the low blood supplies in Las Vegas, and word on the street was that Vasily might have some to spare. A deal was struck for temporary access to his personal supply for a few weeks until she could sort things out, in return for a large boon, which he quickly turn around into having her do some sniffing around for a suitable ghoul with the right religious connections.
  • Vasily found that a lot of 'product' was making its way up noses at UNLV and looking into the matter as to who was operating in his 'turf'. It turned out to that the man behind the blow was Cha's whelp-turned-Vick,Franco Martinez. If it had been any other Vick, he would have run them out on a rail, just on principle, but since he didn't know what kind of understanding the two had and dealing blow wasn't one of Vasily's niche markets, he made Franco an offer. A one-time large boon for an exclusive deal to continue pushing blow in Vasily's turf free of competition - helluva lot better than being nickeled and dimed every year with owing smaller boons.
  • 2007: When Deangelo Bell was shot up by thugs, Michelle Costillo contacted Veles Lazarak to help clean up the mess. Vasily took this as a personal slight as it looked as though they were stepping on his toes and muscling into his 'turf'. To get his point across, he pushed back, attacking the influence of one of Larazak's associates - stealing away some valuable pull within the hospital sector. Such a direct attack was out of character for the normally cautious Vasily, and was answered almost instantly when Lazagrak barred him from one of his favorite haunts for a year - the Moulin Rouge. Relations between the two kindred remained strained and decidedly cool until a few months ago when Vasily felt forced to seek out the elder's advice on spiritual matters. Although strained, this may signal a warming in their "cold war" - or not. Only time will tell.
    • Vasily got a first hand look at Nathaniel Sanders' temper when he made an off-hand remake about "all it would take iz droppink piano on the head, you know?" in relation to how the Prince should handle the issue of Violet Townsend's childe, Damien Reece. It was an off-hand meant in jest, but badly timed. As a result, he was banned from the Elysium for a month to reflect on his choice of words.
  • 2008: Vasily approached Deangelo Bell, after one of the young one's melt-downs in the Elysium, with an offer to talk. He tried to explain to him that "things didn't have to be so difficult for him", discussed the Movement, and made the open-ended offer for to come hangout with some of the Carthians sometime. To date, Bell hasn't taken him up on the offer, but that hasn't stopped Vasily from keeping tabs on this potential recruit.
  • 2009: Vasily broke one of his personal cardinal rules - never deal with the police - a seemingly small lapse in judgement that almost sent shockwaves across the city. It seemed an innocent enough action at the time. - a crooked cop on the take seemed easy enough. But when that same cop was part of a raid on one of the key kingpins of Anthony Lazarak's Italian mafia connection's, it looked like Vasily was reneging on the unspoken truce the two Russian's had. The truth of the matter, that Vasily had no part of it and the incident was coincidental, was moot. As a reaction, Alexei had the the cop framed and ultimately fired, causing the charges to be dropped. Losing this low-level ally, in what Vasily thought was an unprovoked attack, drove him into a rage that only ended with the death of this Mafia kingpin -and with it, a part of Vasily's humanity. With that, the gloves were off and battlelines between Vasily and Anthony drawn. Anthony's initial efforts had little effect on Vasily other than to sever any minor remaining pull he had with the police, and cost the Gangrel a considerable amount of pull with the mob. As they pulled back to regroup for the next round, it seemed to those few in the know that this could spill over into an all-out influence war. Nikolay Turov used this break to council his Sire on the danger of the Crones bringing the Estate directly against them if this escalated. A similar discussion must have made it to Anthony's ear because a sit-down was request by a mutual concern. The meeting managed to halt the aggression before it spilled over to others, but at a cost. Anthony was able to demand a payment of $50,000 from Vasily for his losses, whereas Vasily was able to extract a hunting dog from the Gangrel. Vasily often refers to the dog as "the most expensive mutt in Las Vegas." That fact that he named him 'Toli', short for 'Anatoli' or 'Anthony', brings him more than a little satisfaction.
  • Present: Currently, Vasily has become more introspective about his own existence, growing frustrated by his inability to properly relate to the mortal world and the constant gnawing of his ever growing beast. It is not that he seeks complete redemption for his soul, but more of a better way to balance his life within the Movement and the Vor, his kindred existence, and the mortals around him. As of late, he has been seeking the council of the Russian spiritualist, Veles Lazarak.
    • One of the signs of his starting to question his humanity was the way he handled Deangelo Bell's recent beat-down. Violet Townsend had secretly hired him to lay a beating on Bell for his recent outbursts, but hesitant to handle the job directly, he in turn hired Grayson Lazarak to quietly handle it along with a couple of Vasily's ghouls for insurance. Vasily watched, hidden, wanting to make sure it didn't go "too far", as the trio laid the quick but thorough beat-down. The result was a small boon from Violet, a similar one to owed to Grayson from Vasily, Deangelo got a much needed lesson in Vasily's eyes, and noone else seems no the wiser. He failed in bringing Bell into the Carthian fold before the young one fled town and is now seeking out others to possibly recruit.
    • The recent death of his childe and close friend, Nikolay Turov, at the hands of the hunters, has stuck a deep wound on Vasily, dragging him into even deeper bouts of depression at times.
