Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has always been something of second-best. It was originally an offshoot of the University of Nevada, then became the school Nevada Southern University, which is when it took the moniker “Rebels”. While the school has experienced rapid growth, it’s course and academic prestige have always been considered second-rate.

There have always been bizarre aspects to the city, and eccentrics (genius eccentrics, but eccentrics nonetheless) have always permeated the ranks of the student body and faculty. A wonderful example of this is when Helen Thompson in 1973 decided that the desert campus of UNLV was too “flat” and donated a large sum of funds to build a three-foot hill by one of the campus buildings.

In another example of the ups and downs of the school, the school is known as having one of the best English Departments in the nation, but at the same time has been increasingly criticized for rather poor graduate rates in relation to the amount of money spent on each pupil per academic year. This has lead whistleblowers to exclaim that some of that supposedly-allotted money is being funnelled into other, illicit, affairs and off the record transactions.
