Description
It's no mistake that The 1029 Bar is within walking distance of Union Square's 21st Precinct Station House. If the late model sedans and the occasional police cruiser parked outside weren't clue enough, walking into the bar there's no room for doubt -- The 1029 Bar is a cop bar. Where other bars typically line their walls with alcohol advertisements in neon or other random things to inspire a good time, the walls here are a memorial with portraits of fallen cops with the exception of some Christmas lights, added mostly so that the bartenders can see what they're doing behind the bar.
The bar is small, maximum occupancy of 25 or so with stools lining the bar and three tables against the other wall. There are a few different beers on tap and some hard liquor to be had but nothing that could qualify as top shelf. And if you're looking for a mixed drink that involves an ingredient that's more exotic than tonic or water you'd best go somewhere else. There's a kitchen, of sorts, offering microwave pizzas and fries, onion rings or wings.
The owner of the bar, Ken, is an ex-cop himself (injured in the line of duty) and he's skeptical of anyone coming into the bar who doesn't have the look of a cop. It isn't unheard of for him to over charge anyone who comes in who he doesn't know or who doesn't come in with an officer he knows. The owner isn't the only one there skeptical of people who wander in off the street. If some one comes into the bar that isn't a known officers any conversation that's being had stops immediately.
The bar is typically quiet except for the hum of the fridge and the typically muted television set which is either set on the news or ESPN depending of there's a game. On occasion the juke box comes to life, playing a random classic rock song, but it's rare that anyone pumps money into it. The quiet of the bar suits the boys in blue just fine. They don't come to The 1029 to socialize instead they're there to drink and try to forget the horror that they face each night on the streets of Carcosa. If you aren't there to bitch about the DA's office or your superior officer or the general criminal element of the city (including the city's own government) it's not likely that you'll find any conversation to be had there.
