Introduction

This is a long term study intended to examine the effects of sleep deprivation on kindred and mortals. The main issues probed will be the effect of the notably more aggressive Gangrel beast in the study, and the effect of the second tier of the Coil of Banes, on the reaction of the subjects to sleep deprivation.

Hypothesis

Firstly, it is hypothesized that the second tier of the Coil of Banes will go a great length towards alleviating the negative effects of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation in kindred is a different phenomenon from sleep deprivation in mortals, naturally, but certain common threads are generally accepted as occurring, those being a breakdown in logic, a shortening of temper, delusions, paranoia, and in extreme cases, hysteria and hallucination.

It is further hypothesized that, Gangrel Kindred will exhibit these symptoms to a greater degree as the beast is emboldened by the fading willpower of the ever tiring man. Therefore, it will be necessary to distinguish between several categories for this test. Gangrel who have studied the Coil of Banes to two or more tiers, Gangrel who have not, Non-Gangrel who have studied the Coil of Banes to two or more tiers, Non-Gangrel who have not, and mortals.

The Experiment

Subjects will be given the following:

Name:
Clan:
Years Kindred:

Procedure: Five times daily, attempt to solve three Rubik's cubes, recording the time of each in seconds, and the time of day at which the attempt was made. The attempts should be made at (roughly) the same times every day. You should not sleep for the duration of the experiment. When you fall asleep, consider the experiment terminated. If you frenzy, or are forced to invoke any ability you may possess to avert frenzy, please record that as well.

Mortals will be given the following:

Name:
Sex:
Date of Birth:

Procedure: Five times daily, attempt to solve three Rubik's cubes, recording the time of each in seconds, and the time of day at which the attempt was made. The attempts should be made at (roughly) the same times every day. You should not sleep for the duration of the experiment. When you fall asleep, consider the experiment terminated.

Notes

First Presentation

As the study is in its nascent phase, and at present I am in possession of only data pertaining to a single subject, there are no bases for comparison and no scientific conclusions can be drawn. However, this data can be analyzed to establish a base from which to at least perform comparisons with future applications of the same experiment to the same subject.

In addition to the test described above, in the case of the author and first subject, an additional, and less quantifiable test was applied. I recited to myself from memory whichever sura from the Quran or ahadith came first to mind. The purpose of which, is to later attempt to uncover, through reasoning, memory, and psychoanalysis, the root cause of that choice. Whether useful information can or can not be gleaned from this, and if there exists any means of applying similar testing to other subjects, is not yet known.

Subject Number One

30 December 2006 - 2 January 2007 Subject: Tariq Ibn Iqbal, Scribe of the Curse (Surmount the Daysleep = YES) Years Kindred: 56
Clan: Gangrel

! - represantitive of an utter failure to solve, due to repeated frustration eventually resulting in frenzy and the destruction of the implement.

This trial of the experiment was terminated after the fourth day due to the perceived threat against the Academy from the Invictus, the necessity to be in suitable shape to defend against such threat outweighed the potential gain from continuing the trial.

As soon as a suitable party can be found, intensive psychoanalysis will be taken up to deal with the Surahs and sole Hadith that came up. I will also take personal notes and speculations at my own reasoning. It is believed that the subject's mastery of The Mind of the Devouring Wyrm will negate any severe detrimental effects of the passing of time. All records pertaining to such will be meticulously recorded and a copy kept in the attached folder

The decline in logical capacity, and in patience, and the boldening of the beast all seem to have occurred here. Taking this trial as a microexperiment with the first day of trials, with relatively normal amount of sleep as a control, associates very clearly these degenerations with the lack of sleep. Interestingly, also, is the latent but growing obsession with the Ninety-First Surah, entitled "The Sun." This is the author's fate card, for those who believe in such. It may be significant, and is, at the very least, of interest.

It is further evident, that the detrimental effect to logical capacity was most pronounced during the daylight hours. It is well known that kindred have difficulty maneuvering about during the day, and so it is as yet, unsurprising to find this result.

Because it is the purpose of this experiment to compare data for large numbers of individuals without reference to their particular skill or logical ability but only with the changes in that ability associated with sleep deprivation, it will be necessary to calculate deviations from the norm.

Average Under Normal Rest 50 Solvings 397 seconds
Average For Night Solutions During Test 36 solvings 402 sconds
Average for Day Solutions During Test 23 solvings 583 seconds

Subject Number Two

Subject: Slave Jacob Pfeiffer (Surmount the Daysleep = NO)
Years Kindred: 1.5
Clan: Mekhet

Data invalid. Subject intentionally introduced additional variables into the experiment nullifying all data gleaned from it. Specifically, subject meditated before daylight attempts and not before nighttime attempts, causing a vast decrease in times over daylight hours resulting from the calmer mind.
