Mortal Background

1968

Quang Wu was born in Carcosa in 1968. His Father, An-Yan Wu, was an abusive and strict man who had strong ties to the Carcosa chapter of the Triad underworld society. His mother was once a beautiful woman and a seamstress who had her personality beat out of her at the hand of her Husband. He believed that the work she was doing was frivolous and a waste of time, and so he forbade her from doing any work as a seamstress. Quang Wu was born with traits of both of his parents. He was gifted with his Mother’s creativity and his Father’s strong will. Both traits would later cause him to get into trouble. Quang’s father had a unique approach to raising children, and Quang was treated more like an animal then as a human being. He was beat, regularly, as part of his father’s plan to teach him obedience. His mother tried to protest but was usually rewarded with punishment of her own. The majority of his childhood was spent with bruises and trips to the hospital for both Quang and his mother. Occasionally this would raise the suspicion of their doctor but he would come to learn that alerting the authorities would only cause him trouble in the long run due to An-Yan’s connection with the Triads. So, Quang and Lien were forced to live through and suffer An-Yan’s wrath. Quang had begun to develop amazing artistic skills as well and Lien encouraged him to express those skills when An-Yan was away. However, she knew that An-Yan wouldn’t be pleased with that so she hid their son’s skill from him.

1978

In 1978, at the age of ten, Quang had begun to show that he was highly gifted on an intellectual level. He loved spending time at school because he was away from his father who he had come to loathe and respect through fear alone. At school he was one of the brightest in his class, which didn’t take much, because he applied himself instead of just attending. His creativity sky rocketed while at school and he fascinated the other children in class with his ability to draw highly detailed pictures. His teachers began to notice him as well and encouraged him to develop his skills. It was after school one day in 1981 that Quang found the body of his mother brutally murdered in the Wu family Home. The scene was horrific and it deeply disturbed Quang. His mother was his rock, a strong foundation to an unstable home life. Her death meant that he was completely under the power of his Father, An-Yan, who was also a prime suspect in her murder. However, the pull of the underworld had begun to infect the public offices of Carcosa by this time, and it wasn’t long before his Mother’s murder was swept under the rug completely. Fear of his father quickly turned into a deep hatred.

1985

After his Mother’s death, while Quang was making the transition from grade school to high school, he started to go through a lot of radical changes. On top of maturing physically, his Mother’s death scarred him more than his abusive father ever did. His drawings took on a darker tone and he started to spend a great deal of time researching advanced spiritual doctrines. It was during this time that Quang first came into contact with the concept of metamorphosis. The metamorphosis theory was that one could alter their consciousness by altering their physical form. First the flesh is manipulated which causes a different perspective on the world, which can lead to the practitioner becoming something, spiritually, different and superior. With this discovery Quang began to heavily research a great many things related to this concept. He became intensely interested in genetics, evolution, the occult in general, and methods by which one could change their physical form. Tattoos and piercings became one of his focuses as he already had the creativity and artistic skill, he only need to apply it to the flesh.

Meanwhile, at home, Quang still suffered under the tyrannical rule of his father. Quang tried to spend as much time at school as he could and often would tell his father that he was staying after to participate in extracurricular activities and studying. His father was most displeased by this, as he didn’t see the point of an education. An-Yan told his son that the only way to make it in the world was to be as ruthless as the people in it, and to belong to a group that could protect you. He told Quang that when the time was right he would learn more about the real ways of the world, and that he was only toughening him up for when he would be kicked out onto the streets to fend for himself. An-Yan said that those days were coming soon, Quang had no idea how soon he meant.

1986

In 1986 Quang graduated from high school at the top of his class, which wasn’t hard considering the level of education received in Carcosa public schools. Quang had begun to undergo his own personal metamorphosis. His first physical change was when he started to work out very heavily and he could feel immediately that this wasn’t just a physical change but a psychological one as well. He started to enjoy the burning sensation in his muscles and joints from a rigorous work out. His body also started to change and become more heavily toned and defined. He joined a martial arts Dojo where various forms of hand to hand combat were being taught and began to train heavily with the students there. All of this was part of his desire to experience new sensations and change his perspective in the world. His father actually encouraged the trips to the Dojo and even paid for his admission. Something that Quang found rather suspicious because he wasn’t used to his father doing anything nice for him.

In the Dojo he quickly learned how weak he really was when he was asked to spar against some of his fellow students. It quickly became apparent to him that in order to fulfill his experience he would have to train his body extra hard. He also found that a sort of trance like effect could be achieved from repetitious motions while training. He pushed himself further and harder than any student in his class which earned him the attention of his trainers. They worked with him on a one on one basis to teach him the discipline that he needed to put his will and strength behind. Quang quickly began to rise in the ranks within the Dojo and gain the attention of his Father who actually was somewhat proud of his son’s new interest in fighting.

What An-Yan didn’t know is that Quang had also taken up an apprenticeship at a local tattoo parlor just outside Chinatown. He wasn’t allowed to do any actual work but he was able to closely watch some of the professionals at the tattoo parlor and got to experience firsthand the skills required to, not only apply the tattoos, but to treat them, clean them and work his own skillful artwork onto the flesh of his customers. The owner of the tattoo shop, a man named Jassen Briggs, was rather fond of Quang and the level of diversity he brought to his shop. Jassen took Quang under his wing so to speak and taught him a great deal about the business of running a tattoo shop. Quang surprised both the other artists and Jassen with his skill in handling the customers and helping them decide exactly what they wanted to put on their bodies. He still hadn’t touched a needle yet, but he was already aiding the shop with his natural ability with people.

1988

Quang had been studying the art of tattoo artistry for nearly two years before he was actually allowed to start inking. He amazed his very first customer with how well he could translate their vision into his own artwork and quickly became a favorite at the tattoo shop. Jassen told him on several occasions that he was glad he took Quang in because he had brought new life and new blood to his shop. Quang took up the art of piercing and tattooing quickly and even started planning his own tattoos. His tattoos however were not just for aesthetic value, but to mark his accomplishments and to alter his physical form. The first tattoo he got was a simple drop of blood on his shoulder blade with the Chinese character for martial prowess written inside the drop. This tattoo marked his ascension into a ranking position within his Dojo.

Quang was still studying at his Dojo and had passed into a ranking position that afforded him a small amount of accolades from his instructors. He had successfully completed several of their tests and had proven to have absorbed a great deal of knowledge in his two years at the Dojo. Though he was still in the lowest ranking position in the art, there were more unranked cadets than ranking members. He was now allowed to spar with the other members of his rank and to better himself based on what he learned from fighting them. Several competitions were set up so that the students could test their knowledge against their peers and be awarded for their success. Quang participated in these tournaments on a regular basis and although he didn’t win a single one, he learned from his mistakes in every single match.

1989

An-Yan makes good on his promise to Quang and tells him to pack up and move out. Quang couldn’t be happier to leave his father’s house and get away from the oppression he faced there. He packed up what little he had, which mostly consisted of artwork that he had hidden from his father and several books he had stolen from the library. Quang wasn’t short on enthusiasm to move out, but he was short on money and his father told him that he was cut completely off. So, he did the only thing he knew, and called up his aunt Lili Wu. Lili was An-Yan’s sister, but you couldn’t tell it from the way they acted. Every so often Quang would go to his aunt’s just to escape for a bit and she would welcome him in so long as she wasn’t busy with whatever it was that she did. He asked Lili for a small loan so that he could get an apartment and some necessities. She obliged him with what he needed and so he set off to get himself a place of his own.

He also spoke with Jassen, who he was starting to regard as a father figure, about his predicament and Jassen stepped up to the plate and offered Quang a full time position there at the shop as not only an artist but also as an assistant manager. Quang was quick to jump on the offer and he found himself splitting his free time between three equally important activities for him. He was still enrolled at the Dojo and now was an assistant manager at the tattoo shop. He also was still processing his own religious beliefs and his view on the metamorphosis. Quang registered with the city library and checked out almost every book on the occult and body modification rituals that he could find. He also visited several groups that participated in suspension and extreme body modification, as well as several occultist groups that believed in a mutable mind, body and soul.

1991

Quang was working at the tattoo shop when his father, An-Yan, came to visit him. He had heard through the grape vine that his son was working at the shop and was furious. He tried to attack Quang and Quang defended himself but did not strike back at his father. Jassen tried to intervene and when he did An-Yan broke his neck. Quang was overcome by his rage and assaulted his father, taking out his aggression for the twenty years of torment his father put him through. Before he knew what he was doing, he had killed his father with his bare fists. He quickly closed the shop and called the paramedics but it was too late, Jassen was already dead and Quang grieved more over losing him then he did his own father. When the paramedics and police arrived they arrested Quang for involuntary manslaughter and locked him up in jail.

It wasn’t long after that a couple of Chinese men dressed in suits came to visit him. They didn’t say much of anything to him except that they had put up his bail and swept the whole thing under the rug. In exchange they were going to make him an offer he couldn’t refuse. The unidentified men tucked him into a limousine that drove them around the block. They told Quang that they had been made aware that Mister Briggs had made him the heir to his Tattoo Shop. They told Quang that he would be contacted after all the legalities had been made of the tattoo shop changing hands. Then they would come and claim a portion of profits, and give him further instructions. They told him that if he cooperated then he would not only be protected from the wrath of the Triads avenging one of their own but they would protect him from other things as well.

A few short months later Quang found himself the owner of the Tattoo Shop he had learned everything in. He felt as though his Father and Jassen’s death in the store had stained the very spirit of the place, and it left the shop hollow and empty to him. It was then that he decided to get his second tattoo. This one would be on the back of his neck. It was a skull with a Chinese character on the forehead of the skull that meant “Murder”. Underneath the skull he put “II” roman numerals indicating the number of people whose death he felt responsible for. Quang went about running the business the best he could and did a rather good job at it for being thrust into the whole operation. Some of the tattoo artists he’d been working with left to find more illustrious shops, but a majority stayed behind due to loyalty to Jassen, and now Quang.

A few short months after that, the men in the suits came back, this time with a suitcase and guns. They came right before the shop closed and right after all the other staff had left. They cornered Quang and gave him the briefcase. They gave him the choice of offering up 10% of his profits or being killed for killing one of their brothers. Quang had already made his choice before they even came into the store and had his ten percent waiting for them. He pulled it out of the safe in the wall and laid it out in the briefcase. When he was done, the Triads left giving him a phone number for his troubles.

1992

Quang became one of the top ranking members at the Dojo he was training at and, with permission from his master instructor, decides to leave the dojo to focus on his business. He had decided to sell the tattoo parlor he had worked at since he was eighteen to one of the more business minded artists there. His own artistry with tattoos had become well known throughout Carcosa and he had several personal clients that would not see anyone other than Quang. Quang called the number he had been given from the Triads and requested a meeting with them. In the meeting, which consisted of him talking to three armed enforcers, he requested a small loan to start his own tattoo parlor in Chinatown. In exchange for their benevolence he would not only repay them, and give them their usual cut, but he would also make sure that the tattoo parlor had enough room to operate as a safe house for their organization. Apparently his willingness to cooperate with them afforded him a small amount of respect within the organization because they agreed to his offer and loaned him the money. Quang immediately set to work on renovating a rather large building into a place suitable for his needs.

Quang had other plans other than just tattoos and piercings this time, though. He had decided to create a place hidden within his parlor that he could use as a way to test his own flesh to see how mutable it was. He had become slightly obsessed with the concept of metamorphosism and had documented his own change in mentality. He was relatively unmarked by tattoos but those tattoos represented drastic changes in his person. He had become a self sustaining individual through his own means. He had effectively defended himself against attack from his father, and then killed him with his own hands. Now he intended on seeing just how much altering of his own physical form his flesh would tolerate.

The Tattoo parlor received zoning and tattoo license quicker then he could ever imagine and he wondered if the Triads had something to do with that. Where at first he gave them what they wanted because of fear now he was actually beginning to enjoy the benefits of being cooperative. Quang decided to name the shop “Blood, Sweat and Ink” and it was instantly successful the moment he opened up the doors. Again he suspected the Triads, because a chunk of his clients were getting some odd sayings tattooed onto their flesh. He couldn’t blame them though, and he found that that sort of tattoo was the most personal one someone could get. He had two similar tattoos, after all.

1993

Blood, sweat and ink was becoming boisterously popular in Chinatown and even outside of Chinatown. All of his previous clientele followed him to his new shop and they enjoyed listening to him talk about his unique take on piercings, tattoos and body modification. He even had several clients that wanted him to teach them more about his religious and spiritual views, to which he declined regrettably because he felt that journey was a personal one, not meant to be monopolized and codified. He came to know some of the Triad members by name and deed as they came into the store, and on several occasions he escorted wounded triad members down to the secret meeting room until help could arrive. On one such occasion a Triad member came stumbling through his door beaten and bloody and a couple angry looking men followed in after him. Why Quang felt the need to defend the guy was beyond him, but he did, and used his martial arts prowess to send the Triad’s assailants packing. The next day he found an envelope stuffed into his mailbox with a rather large stack of hundred dollar bills in it. He invested that money right back into the shop and upgraded the equipment and bought new material for making his ink. Quang had learned a small amount of chemistry, enough to formulate his own inks for use in his art.

While his business flourished, Quang devoted more time to his transformation. His first task was to test his body’s resistance to pain. He had ordered surgical steel suspension hooks and suspended himself slowly from the rafters of his building. The initial pain was hardly a pinch, and then the pain of his skin being pulled back was slightly uncomfortable but he found the experience to be spiritually uplifting. He tried to stay suspended for as long as he could and then removed the hooks and cleaned his wounds. He would start to do this more often and meditate while he was suspended in midair by the hooks. He started to discover that he had a very high tolerance for pain and discomfort and would start to push the boundaries between pain and pleasure. He made small incisions in his flesh with a scalpel and all sorts of what could be considered gruesome techniques to see how far he could push his physical form. He started to incorporate bizarre rituals designed to channel occult energy into his somewhat deranged experiments of pushing the line between pleasure and pain. The result would be several scars all over his body in increasingly intricate patterns. At first these scars stayed in areas where they wouldn’t be seen, but he gradually worked them out onto his arms and legs as well as his chest. To his customers, this only made Quang that much more of an interesting tattoo artist.

1995

In 1995 Quang opened up another Blood Sweat and Ink outside of Chinatown he hired a manager and several artists to work there and managed to increase his profits. He also began to use his stores as a way to find other people with interests similar to his. In this way he discovered the church of Body Modification, a group of people who believes that their body is their own to do with as they please and they preach about spiritual enlightenment through body modification. Quang began to regularly meet with the group to learn all he could about their faith, and was welcomed even though he never did join their group. When he went to their sessions he saw all forms of suspension and extreme body modification. At one point the Lizard Man came to one of their exhibitions and Quang was amazed at the level of thought and detail that went into his modifications. However, Quang fundamentally disagreed with the purpose of his modifications. To Quang, the ideal is to ascend beyond humanity not fall below it by degrading yourself to the point of looking like an animal. He did however take back some valuable information and was able to get permission to show pictures that he took in his stores. Quang also gained a valuable and loyal customer base from people within the Church.

Later on that year Quang was approached by a high ranking officer of the Triads to discuss him becoming a Triad artist. He would not be required to swear an oath to the Triads but he would be required to swear an oath to keep any information or markings completely secret. Failure to follow that simple rule would result in death by the knife. Quang felt as though it would be an honor to be an artist skilled enough to be valued by the Triad and so he swore the oath of the silent tongue. He would be given an envelope very infrequently that would contain contact numbers for members of the Triad who would be marked by his needle. He also would be told what kind of tattoo to mark them with. He received his first envelope the same day he swore his oath, and it contained fifteen names. He was slightly disturbed when one of the tattoos he was to apply was nothing short of a declaration to other members of the Triad to bring that person, dead or alive, to their leader. However, he knew full well that failure to apply the tattoo would cause a very similar fate for him. As he did more and more work for the Triads, marking them as they rose in rank and committed more deeds for the society, he was granted more and more esteem within their brotherhood. It wouldn’t be long until he could recognize the face of many of the Triads in Chinatown and when he did he would give them a slight nod and they would nod back. That’s when he knew that his reputation was growing rather large.

1997

Quang enjoyed a relatively easy life for a couple of years where he just continued his own personal growth both spiritually and monetarily. However, when he was sent to mark a young triad female he fell for her hard. Her name was Kimberly Chung, and she was the daughter of a powerful Triad officer. She was infatuated with him as well, and was deeply interested in his scars and tattoos that he had. He explained his beliefs to her and had more conversation with her during the marking process then he had with all of his other triad clients combined. She agreed to meet him for lunch and gave him her phone number. They met and went on a couple of dates, and they ended up becoming heated and in Quang’s apartment. It was through his personal relationship with her did he find out that she was a traitor and a spy. Quang found himself forced into making the hard decision of aiding her and being marked for death by the Triads, or turning her in and losing someone close to him. Quang meditated long and hard on his options and chose the one that was most beneficial to him. He turned Chung in and when she disappeared several days later he added another tally to his skull tattoo. He received notice that a high ranking officer of the Triads wished to meet him personally to commend him for his loyalty. The meeting with the very powerful officer was rather quiet and very common place, it was like the man was taking stock of him and measuring his actions but he never actually spoke to Quang. Instead he was given a briefcase with twenty grand in it as a reward for his loyalty. However, Quang had the sneaking suspicion he had not heard the last from the Officer he had met.

1997-1999

Quang spent the next couple of years focusing on his businesses which were thriving. He upgraded all of the equipment in both stores and changed the décor of the interior to make it more modern. He also paid to send his artists to a tattoo and piercing seminar held in New York for artists. Quang had become a rather successful business man as well as an amazing tattoo artist. His skill with the needle and his very interesting ideas about Tattoos and piercings made him a very sought after artist within the city. He had become extremely tied to the underworld in Chinatown and had developed a few contacts within the Triads as well as made himself important to the Triads themselves. It was because of this that Kien Zhao’s king requested that he be embraced. The Triads had an invested interest in preserving Quang’s art as well as keeping him as a valuable contact within their society.

The Requiem Begins

2000

One night while Quang was working late at Blood Sweat and Ink Kien Zhao came to visit him. He didn’t recognize Kien as a Triad but that could be because Kien was more of a puppet master then a puppet. There was little to any small talk or even talk about what Kien wanted. One minute he was conscious and aware of his surroundings and the next he was waking up in a dimly lit basement room. He felt different, something had changed in him, and he could feel a ravenous hunger in his gut he had never before experienced. His whole body was weak and ached as if he had been through the most rigorous work out of his life. It took him a moment to focus on his surroundings. Soon the dark room started to become slightly clearer and he could make out the outline of objects. He also began to hear something moving around in the room with him. The thing snarled and snorted and Quang reached out to search for something to defend himself with. He came across a tiny pocket knife that was laying next to him and he moved as quickly as he could to his haunches, staring at the darkness in the direction of the snarling.

Even as he moved the boar that was in the room with him started to charge and lower its tusks to impale Quang. Quang couldn’t react quickly enough and felt the bony tusks slide into his belly and then jerk upwards. He screamed out in agony and then jabbed his knife downward into his assailant. The creature made a yelping noise that could unnerve the most stalwart of men, but Quang was able to pull himself off the creature’s tusks. He felt his wound, waiting for the inevitable torrential pouring of blood from his body, but it never came. The creature still moved around about him, not dead but only injured. He tightened his grip on the knife he was still holding and then something unexpected happened. He could smell the animal’s blood on his knife, and the aroma was so intoxicating to him. He felt something deep within him grit its teeth and break its leash and he started to charge the creature. Despite his attempts to reign himself under control, he continued to hurl himself forward at the Boar. His knife dropped to the ground before he even made it to the creature but he could feel sharp fangs extending from his mouth. Before he even could think he was on top of the creature, ripping into its flesh with those fangs. He tasted the blood of his kill and as the viscous liquid dripped down his throat he could feel his body responding and becoming more alive. His wounds healed almost of their own accord as he drank the creature’s blood until there was no more to be had.

When the beast was contained and satisfied, Quang sat on his knees near the Boar and studied himself in the low light of the basement. His fangs slowly receded as they were no longer needed and the ache in his body slowly dissipated as the blood coursed through his dead body by will alone. He felt more alive in those few minutes after his feeding then he had in a long while. The lights in the basement flicked on and Quang was momentarily blinded by the flash of the bulbs. When his eyes adjusted he looked around him at his surroundings and saw that he was in a mostly empty room, however there was a full length mirror that was obviously placed there for a purpose. Quang stood and walked over to the mirror and discovered that his reflection had become a blur, and he couldn’t even recognize himself in it. He could see the smear of blood all over him as it colored the blur a dull crimson color. His satiation with the blood he had drunk from the boar lasted only a moment before his beast caused him to want more. Repulsed at the thoughts going through his head he looked at the door blocking his way out of the basement and moved towards it. Before he even got close the door opened and Kien walked into the basement room with him.

It was then that Quang learned of his plight, and of the existence of the kindred. Kien began his education on the ways of the kindred and of the Invictus, but all the while Quang struggled with his own religious beliefs of ascension and transformation. Surely, this transformation from life to undeath was an important step in his personal journey. He became a Paige in the Invictus and he immediately felt as though the entire covenant was dousing his goal of change. His unwillingness to just accept the anachronistic teachings of the covenant did not result in resentment towards the Invictus, or for his sire who he still respected a great deal. However, when he met his Grandsire, Alexander, and began to learn about the Ordo Dracul he knew almost instantly that the Dragons would better serve his own purpose of personal transformation and ascension. To Quang, Vampirism was merely a step in a long chain of events that would lead him to becoming something more. Alexander played on those desires and could tell from Quang’s commitment to change that he would become a very useful Dragon.

It was around this time, too, that Quang learned that his aunt Lilly had been kindred for a long while. She was understandably upset that Quang had been picked up by another member of the Triads, as one of their oaths was that the family of their brothers and sisters would remain unharmed. Quang was unaware of any kind of agreement between the two of them, but the issue seemed to fade and both parties went about their requiems. Quang did not immediately express his desire to join the Ordo Dracul to his sire, and instead continued his lessons in the Invictus’ code of ethics and dogma. However, Alexander had different plans. Quang did not wish to have special treatment, but he would later wish that Alexander hadn’t decided to put him through a trial by fire to test his loyalties. Alexander spoke to Kien about Quang’s wishes to join the Ordo Dracul, and was later confronted by his Sire about it. It was then that Quang learned that Kien was once a member of the Ordo Dracul, and had switched Covenants much like he was going to. Kien was less then pissed off, but also less than happy with his decision. At Alexander’s request, and Kien’s agreement, Quang was stripped of his status as Paige to the invictus before he even had started the process of becoming a Dragon. So for the next few months he would be treated as an unbound.

2001

The Trial by fire begins for Quang, and Alexander forces him to face many of the anathema of kindred. He was confronted with fire, with branding, with daylight itself and forced to stop feeding for extended periods of time. After each test Alexander questioned him and asked him if he still had the same desire to join the covenant. After each test, Quang’s faith that he was making the right decision was confirmed. Surely the secrets that this covenant guarded were powerful ones if so much agony had to be endured in order to even begin training. He suffered many more death defying trials, including being keel hauled, being slowly dissected, and much worse. Eventually, Alexander was convinced of his loyalty to the covenant and allowed him to join the Ordo Dracul.

Quang starts his lessons with Alexander and other members of the covenant as a slave and impresses them with his eagerness to not only learn about the coils and the Great Work, but to experience the trials of learning them. He eagerly acts as a guinea pig for any of the covenant members who need to test their results on kindred, despite their warnings that it could be painful. His Masochism becomes increasingly more intense as time progresses and he starts researching even deeper into the occult to uncover ritualistic methods through which to achieve a state of chrysalis.

Quang hires managers for his tattoo parlors and fades out of the lime light while still drawing resources from the shops. He stops seeing clients except those he is marking for the triads. He does get involved in the city and goes to the social gatherings and what not within the city. He deals with the snide remarks from those in the Invictus, who were displeased with his departure from their covenant, relatively well and does not try to get into arguments with them. Quang doesn’t have any beef with anyone so soon into his requiem, and even if he dislikes someone just for who they are he doesn’t outwardly display his disdain.

2002

When Kien is put into the forefront of a plan to overthrow the current prince, Quang tries to support his sire as much as he can without crossing covenant loyalties. Quang attempts to show a great deal of respect to Kien Zhao and his supporters throughout the entire process. Meanwhile, Quang’s studies and devotion to his work brings about his first results and he reaches chrysalis for the first time. Quang can feel the change affect his very being and he becomes slightly addicted to the intoxicating feeling of being within the “Womb of Chrysalis”. It is a sensation that Quang has been searching for his entire life, not just his requiem. Quang marks himself with a meaningful tattoo to show that he has started down the path of learning one of the coils.
