Different Poker Games

There's actually tons of different types of poker games, but for ease of keeping this page relatively short, here's a few of the most common variations.

Basic Seven Card Stud

7-Card Stud starts with 2 cards dealt face down and one card dealt face up to each Player.

Play proceeds with the highest visible hand (the first one from the Dealer's left if a tie) starting a betting round. When betting is concluded, another face-up card is dealt. Repeat until all Players have 4 face-up cards.

In the final round, one last face-down card is deal to each player, and a final round of betting proceeds. the winner is the Player with the highest hand 5-card hand out of all 7 cards.

Basic Five Card Draw

This is the game most people think of as Poker.

There are two rounds. The first round consists of dealing 5 cards face down to each Player. The Players look at their cards, and a betting round begins with the Player to the Dealer's left.

At the end of the betting round, each Player, starting to the Dealer's left, can choose to discard up to three cards and receive new ones from the Deck. Optionally, up to 4 cards can be discarded if the remaining card is an Ace, this has to be called at the beginning of the game ("4 card discard for Ace?").

After all Players have either held their cards or rceived new ones, another betting round begins.

After the second round, the Player with the highest hand wins.

Poker Rules, Short Version

Pros: Short and dirty, no one will hate you for spamming their channel with rolls.

Cons: Not a very realistic representation of Poker.

Wits + Empathy or Investigation + Subterfuge

Each roll wins a "round" of Poker.

Poker Rules, Longer - but more realistic - Version

Pros: Good realistic example of how poker should work.

Cons: People might get cranky if you spam their channel with dice rolls.

Initially, on the deal, all players make a Wits + Empathy or Investigation + Subterfuge roll.

Bets are made as per normal poker, people fold if necessary, cards are dealt/flipped/whatever according to their game-type.

Rounds of betting should be done with each "flop" of cards. The roll for this is the same as the initial roll, however, if an individual gained on the prior roll an exceptional success, all other players must roll with a -1 penalty to that "flop". That penalty only lasts that one round. If multiple people gain an exceptional, the penalty increases appropriately.

At the end of the game - whoever is still in with the highest number of successes will win that hand of poker.
