I woke with a start - with damp soil pressed to my face and overtaken by such an immense hunger like I’ve never felt before. Pawing my way through the darkness I took in the geography of my prison with my hands - earthen floor, hard, cold metallic walls, and no way out.
I came to again, huddled a corner, my back pressed to the wall behind me, some of my clothes torn and the tips of my fingers worked down to what felt like the bone. How much time had lapsed between where I sat now and when I first awoke? I heard a clank above me, as if something was opening, and a narrow shaft of light cast down into the room. A heavy shadow passed through the light and impacted with the ground below it. Something was in here with me. My ears heard what I thought might sound like a whimper and then a sweet smell filled my nose.
There was something warm and wet all over me when I regained my senses this time. The sweet smell still hung in the air around me, but that aching hunger seemed pacified. I felt my way around the darkness once more until my hand found the source of the odor and satiation. It didn’t take me long to figure out a body was touching my finger tips - one that had it’s throat torn open, leaving a gaping cavity where some artery had once been. I was left alone with a decaying corpse for company.
So the days continued - or what I could assume were days. I slept, a heavy, lifeless sleep in which I was sure I didn’t move an inch for hours, in which the only interruption was a terrible nightmare, carrying over into my waking hours like a foggy spectre. The only markings of any time passing were when the door overhead opened and a new body joined me - sometimes crying, weeping and occasionally catatonic. I soon learned that drinking from them stopped the throbbing hunger with which I woke, but I didn’t need to destroy them or lose consciousness while doing it. I could also convince them to stay calm, to do things for me in the darkness when our our eyes met just right.
I was ready for the drop this time. The two people with me were ready too. The overhead door opened and the two breathing bodies rushed forward and hoisted me into the air. I grabbed the edge and pulled myself up. My eyes instantly met an imposing man standing over me and locked in with his. I felt myself pour every once of will as I commanded him to stand still and let me out of the way. I rose rapidly and scrambled through what seemed to be a rundown warehouse towards the exit. I broke into a run once I cleared the doorway - determined to put as much distance between myself and that place. A car skidded to a stop in front of me before I even cleared the parking lot and a redheaded woman stepped out from the backseat. She offered me a lifeless smile and motioned for me to get in with her. “Congratulations, you’ve proven you’re worthy. There’s a lot to tell you. Get in.”
