New York City has the distinction of being the largest city in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Its boundaries span from the Atlantic Ocean inward and it possesses many of America’s most well known landmarks. New York City is a city of duality. Many of America’s immigrants never got past the tenements not far from the shoreline while America’s rich continued to move to the high rises of Manhattan.

This is as distinct now as it ever was. There are streets that police won’t go down because they’re owned by gangs and war-zones dangerous enough to rival any in foreign nations. On the other side of the same coin, there are the dazzling townhouses of the wealthy that shine like beacons all in a row and give the impression nothing dirty could possibly touch them.

The truth is a little less clean. Politics in New York City are dirty, they have been since machine politics took hold and now they continue that way. In many ways, and especially in this, Carcosa and New York City could be twins. The wealthy stay wealthy while making sure the poor stay poor, not out of malice but out of a desire to pretend that the lesser fortunate don’t exist. The occasional fundraiser for the less fortunate usually comes from some politician or corporate mogul instructing their wife to find a tax write-off.

Meanwhile the poor stay poor because they know no other thing. Many of them are descended from immigrants who were poor in their homeland and poorer in America. Their public schools are just recruiting grounds for gangs while their homes are dingy and overcrowded. To be born into the slums of New York City is to be born without hope. Many of those living there recognize that and presume the futility of changing it, thus in the tenements no progress is made.

New York City’s Kindred

The city belongs to the Carthian Movement, heart and soul. Their members are seen at every level of the city, from the most dangerous slums to the sparking glitterati. Few covenants come close to rivaling the Carthian Movement for numbers but the one that comes closest is the Lancea Sanctum. The Sanctified silently suffer the Carthian’s tendency to mingle with their food while they extol their beliefs: in truth, there’s so much work for them to do in NYC that they can easily ignore the other covenants.

Each of the other covenants sports numerous Kindred however, much like their mortal counterparts; they segregate themselves into their respective spheres. Unless personal spheres overlap, it’s rare that members of differing covenants gather except for events and Elysiums. The Unbound aren’t as prevalent as one would think, that, or they’re just harder to count. They stick to the places no one else wishes to go, each building their own solitary herds and pursuing their solitary desires. There is no organization between the Unaligned and they’re happy with this.

Rumors that have trickled down to Carcosa about New York

  • "The Sanctified are all over people there; they flag them down and harass them with pamphlets everywhere you go. Seriously."
  • "I've never really encountered Sanctified there, actually..."
  • "[Sanctified] could rival the Carthians if they wanted to, but they're busily doing their bogeyman thing."
