After dark, few people walk along Morgan’s Landing. Those who do are either headed home from (or out to?) a night of drinking or up to no good. There is no middle ground. If you look closely you can see hookers or pickpockets lounging in dark alleyways, waiting for a target. Even the men who choose to walk this dark lane do so in groups of two or three most often. Women who choose to walk it after dark are often thought of as “having it coming to them” whatever may happen.

On one side of the lane stretch the docks in all their glory. Large shadows of fishing ships create darker blobs against the already shadowed street. The shipping docks further down can be heard throughout the night as a melody of distant clanging punctuated by shouts.

On the other side of the docks are a line of the few places in Oceanfront that stay open after dark. All of them are entertainment venues and most of them are bars. There is one well known whorehouse that operates out of the area which the police can’t seem to be bothered with shutting down. If you’re looking for a little safer pleasure than the dockside doxies can provide, Madam Chu’s is the place to go.
