Madam Chu's

Description

Nestled between an unoccupied warehouse and a well traversed tavern is an unadorned grey door with peeling paint and a tarnished silver-tone door knob. No name or number indicates the building but those who often traverse the streets of Oceanfront know that that particular grey door with silver knob leads to the heaven to rough young men known as Madam Chu’s.

Gaining entrance is as simple as knocking and stepping in. The scent of heavy incense masks the smell of stale sweat and sex. The front room is illuminated by a single lamp with a red shade but even that low light cannot completely conceal the signs of neglect: cracked plaster, frayed carpets and stained furniture. At any given time there’s two or three of Madam Chu’s girls lounging around the main room; the darkness barely conceals their signs of neglect either: deep wrinkles, too heavy makeup and glazed hopeless eyes.

A single set of stairs leads up to a hallway with six tiny bedrooms off of it. Each bedroom is equipped with bed, chair and dresser and mirror. It’s a well known “secret” that peep holes dot the rooms for those customers who derive satisfaction other ways. While the place is run down in general, Madam Chu prides herself on having “clean” girls and it’s not unusual for them to be swapped out fairly often – yet somehow they manage to always to have the same empty look about them. And on Oceanfront the resignation is well deserved because not even the police care enough about the little place to close it down.
