The Area
Nestled in the ethnic row of neighborhoods on the west side of Carcosa, between Cabbagetown and Little Ethiopia, Little Italy has carved out itself from the crowd as a home to the vast majority of lower class Italians in the city. Contrary to popular belief, while organized crime certainly has it's hands in the area, it isn't centered here in Little Italy. Instead, the area is actually more of residential apartment buildings sprinkled with a few, undermanaged greenspaces in between.
There's some night spots, but they're far and few between. Mostly, though, the businesses are littered with "authentic Italian" restaurants, and the smell of garlic permeates the air in the less residential side of the neighborhood. The streets aren't cleaned, and last season's salt seems to perpetually be on the side of the road. Near the packaging plants, the nauseating vomit smell of processed goods mixes with the salty sea air and the overpowering scent of a few nearby restaurants to form a near-toxic air quality.
While not as large as it's neighboring Cabbagetown, Little Italy still has a sizable population. The most common crime that's reported in Little Italy is domestic violence, and the divorce rate of the area is astronomical when compared to the rest of the city. This fact has prompted some of the local Diocese to attempt to get more involved with the people, but it's mostly been to little effect. Alcohol mixed with hard work and low pay tends to make even the most family oriented man or woman abusive and cruel.
