I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success ... Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything. - Nikola Tesla

The Spark of Life

1954

I was born a mutt, like so many in this city that God has turned his back upon. Lost Carcosa. The squalling child of a Polish factory worker and a Russian seamstress. There have been times I have loved them and times I have rued the stormy night of my birth.

1963

All of nine years old. It didn't take me long to figure out how smart I was, but the rest of the world hadn't caught on yet. During the summers I'd sometimes follow my father to work, watching the great machines with keen fascination. I would root through the trash, taking apart whatever I found and putting it back together. The games of the other children often seemed dull to me.

1972-1975

I graduate from high school with numerous honors in science, and several scholarships are offered to me. Nonethless, at the will of my father's old fashioned ideals, I willingly enlist for two years of military service in the Vietnam War. War, they say, is hell, and while I suppose that is true, my assignment was pretty easy. Largely I was stationed with the Engineer Corps in Saigon, fixing broken Hueys and Humvees. I spent a lot of time with the locals, which not only allowed me a broader cultural view of this world, but permitted me to discover several VietCong spies, for which I received some acclaim. When I wasn't with the locals or on duty, I was pursuing my education privately as best I could, studying engineering and architecture. I still have the photos... sometimes it is good to remember the darkness of war.

My tenure, to my dismay, was extended an additional year, but that year was cut short by the withdrawal of American troops. I didn't watch Saigon fall, no, but I saw another old city fall when I returned home...
