Mortal Life
Keisha Njiri (neh jeer ee) was born in the summer of 1943 to Sauda and Dalmar Njiri in Shreveport, Louisiana. To the rest of the world they were known as the Coles. The on-going belief among Keisha’s family is that her ancestors were from the Ashanti Empire in Ghana. Whether this is true or not has been lost over time. However it did seem to shape and form the way the family felt about their heritage and adopted a lot of their feelings and culture; albeit somewhat loosely adopted.
Keisha was an exceptionally beautiful child. She had only one sibling, a brother with whom she loved dearly. Her parents allowed her to be free-spirited and willful. This caused her to get into some trouble school wise, but her parent’s would write is off as youthful exhuberance. This would change as she entered puberty as it is Ashanti tradition to consider children who enter this age to be accountable for their actions. The transition was particularly difficult for Keisha. She went from being carefree to being scolded and chided for things that she did. Her parents grew increasingly strict with her. She would eventually settle into being more in control of her actions and buckled down with her school work and other responsibilities, even if she did still keep a bit of her carefree fiery nature. She would excel in school and aspired to attend an all black college.
As was the case for most African Americans during this time, racism was always an issue for her family. Segregation had her going to all black schools and her family’s income was minimal. Never the less, Keisha’s family did scrape together enough money to help her enter an all black college in 1951. Besides her family’s help, Keisha worked two jobs just to make due. It was during this time that she would further study the Ashanti Empire in Africa and she grew increasing enthralled with the culture and the mystcism surrounding it. She took from it what she would and found that others at her college that were interested in it. They would form their own little group and borrow from the culture and mythology though to form their own beliefs and structure. A structure more founded in the empowerment of womanhood rather that the lowliness and “unleanliness” of it. She would become very outspoken in the college and was always seen as a bit of a sassy rebel.
During her junior year in school, her parents and brother traveled to Mississippi to help one their relatives who was sick. This was to be an ill fated trip. The home the family was staying in was raided by a white supremacist group and the home torched and burned with the family still inside. Those who tried to leave the home were shot. Keisha’s parents and brother were killed. Keisha’s grieved greatly and vowed she would make someone pay for their deaths.
Keisha would finish college with help from her cult members and members of the community who were outraged. She would graduate with a degree in Anthropology with an emphasis in West African cultures and mysticism. There wasn’t much work for her after school, but she would manage to find work in a “pseudo-pagan” occult type store in New Orleans. She found the city to be to her liking and found it relatively easy to build up a small group of people with an interest in the Ashanti culture and would host gatherings at a back room in the store. It would be here that she would meet the man who would change her life forever.
Malcolm Dunham was one of the more active members of the group. His presence was always comforting and Keisha immediately took a liking to him. It also seemed as though he was more serious than a lot of the other members of the group and really knew his stuff. Soon the group mainly was just Malcolm and Keisha and they developed a relationship. It was during this time Keisha would find out Malcolm was a Vampire and was soon embraced.
Embrace and Requiem before Atlanta
The transition seemed to be an easy one for Keisha as the mysticism surrounding the Ashanti had always included all sorts of supernatural beings and it seemed to be no big shock to her that Vampires existed. She reveled in the state of being a Kindred and was a natural to start her education in the Circle of the Crone. She would go through many tribulations not only of a physical nature through pain and endurance, but also of a spiritual nature through mental torture and anguish.
Her final hurdle would be one that Hierophant thought was of a great importance before she could fully give herself to following the path of enlightment. The last thing that would tie her to her mortality and that would be her vow to avenge her parents. The one tribulation she had been going through since before her embrace that she had yet to overcome. It took a year but it would at last be fulfilled. She would kill a member of the Klan’s family then a week later would kill the clan member. It had not mattered whether or not it was the actual person. The act had freed her of the final thing that had held her back. She presented the heart of the man to the Heirophant and the covenant would feast on it in celebration.
As she slept during the day to follow she would have a vision of Anansi, an Ashanti god, in his spider form. His appearance to her was a revelation and she knew she must more fully embrace her Daeva nature and become smart and wiley. She would later learn the secrets of Cruac and be an active member of the Crone in New Orleans through tto the turn of the century.
It would be a dark day in 2005 when Katrina was headed to New Orleans that her sire nervous about the chaos that would ensue if New Orleans were hit that they decided to hurry and leave the area. With the help of her Sire’s herd and other members of the Crone they would travel to Macon, Georgia to stay with connection Malcolm had there. They made due there for awhile, but what they had walked into was a major ongoing feud between the elders of the Crone and Lancea Sanctum. This would come to a boil in the first part of 2008 and the Hierophant was torpored. Not feeling safe in the city anymore, Keisha and Malcolm agreed to part ways to find another place to stay. Malcolm would stay in Macon and Keisha to Atlanta to work at a local occult shop and to check out the city for Malcolm.
