Scribbled in one of the notebooks which litter the bookshelves in his meager haven:
"Things change. People change.
"When I was first embraced, I had a job to do. He was a strict man, my sire, but a fair man. He never asked me to do anything that was beyond my means, but he pushed my abilities to the limit most nights. He was a Carthian which meant that, by default, I was one as well. He talked a big game, but he had big plans too.
"He kept me out of sight for a long time. He didn't want me talking. My job was to keep his communications with others a secret. My position left me privy to those messages, to some degree. Some were written in a cipher that I couldn't follow, at least not at first. He was right to code those messages before I ran them through the encryption protocols I'd written for him, because when I found out how to decode them, I could never look at him the same way again.
"Rather than threaten him with exposure, I decided to leave. I remember that night very clearly. I subtly made him aware that I'd broken his cipher, and before he could react, I told him that I would leave quietly and never look back. He spat at me, demanded that I assist in purging the local Movement of the one's he'd named as traitors to prove my sincerity. But he never stopped me. The whole thing may well have been all talk. I never did look back, as I'd promised, so I can't say for sure whether he carried out his plan or not.
"I wandered for a time then, always watching from the shadows. No one ever welcomed me with open arms. I survived, though. I paid for everything in cash and kept my head down, avoided trouble at every turn. More than a few times, I got lucky. But after Philadelphia, I couldn't take it anymore...
