No, but Seriously
Jacob Pfeiffer grew up in Los Angeles, born in the year 1979. His family was just barely on the underside of the poverty line, scraping together just enough to live in a small house with his sister, mother, and father. His father sold Life Insurance, and business really wasnt very good. In High School, Jacob got into the drug scene (among others), sneaking out at night to avoid the stern eye of his relentlessly conservative Christian parents, and finding out just how great the nightlife can be. He developed many social skills, and became quite adept and charming his way through just about anything. He began his reputation as a womanizer here as well, using his newfound confidence and charm to offset his age. He played trumpet in high school becoming quite good, and his mother had insisted on piano lessons from an early age. Once he taught himself guitar, he became quite the formidable musician, and made a decent amount of money over the years playing gigs with various bands. During this time he also picked up his hobby of fencing, never becoming exceptional at it, but always finding it fun and interesting.
Despite it all, no matter how tired or secretly hungover he was, his parents dragged him to church every Sunday. This force-feeding of religion, combined with the Puritanical message being preached and the fanaticism with which his parents clung to it formed the basis for his later fervent atheism.
He went to a local community college, where his impoverished family meant that he could get pretty much all the financial aid he wanted. During this time he developed a fascination with Celtic Culture, Anthropology, and later Archeology. It was actually this Archeology teacher that later helped him along and got him accepted to UCLA, where he majored in Cultural Anthropology with an emphasis on religion. By this point he was a fervent atheist and evolutionist, though his studies helped him learn how to understand all religions and cultures objectively, and never to judge them based on his own beliefs - an outlook that has saved him from making many enemies.
He utilized his growing network of school contacts to secure a job working on a dig at Port Royal, Jamaica, excavating several buildings and uncovering priceless artifacts. From there he went on to head up his own project in Armenia, studying acculturation of early Parthian feudalism into the surrounding areas in the early Middle Ages. Because of that he speaks Armenian, and he picked up some German being over there too (mostly brushing up on High School and college class German he took).
In between field seasons, Archaeologists need somewhere to go, and a community college in Atlanta provided that place for Jacob. They gave him a position teaching there, and he has acquired many contacts in both the main Universities and the community colleges. He had a small apartment he lived in, and things were going well for him.
His interest in religion had broadened into interest in the Occult in Eastern Europe, where he spent a good deal of time studying the many myths of vampires, ghosts, werewolves, demons, sorcerers, and everything else, trying to figure out what forces could have shaped the human experience to come up with such myths. It never really occurred to him, even for a moment, that they might all be true.
A Turn For The Worse
The news that his parents had both died suddenly in a car crash came as things seemed to be going best for him. He grew more despondent and withdrawn for a few months, shunning a lot of social contact and dealing with himself and his own grief. When he came back out of his shell to join those he knew, he was much the same, but any one of them would have commented about the new darkness that saturated him.
All was not lost in their death, however. His dad believed in the product he sold, and had well over a million dollars on both his life and his wife's, meaning that Jacob came into quite a substantial sum, between that and the auctioning off of the estate. He split it with his sister (who was going to school at UC Davis, and they never really talked much), and they continued as they had before. He was wise enough to invest the better part of it so that it would give him a constant income for the rest of his life, rather then blowing it all on something extravagant.
Not to say he didnt blow a little of it, though. He bought a large, two-story house in Midtown, living there by himself, trying to be comforted by the fact that he could afford such a place, and never really considering how empty and lonely it felt. He threw some social get-togethers for his peers, friends, and colleagues, but it really just wasnt the same.
A Darker Side
During this time he met a lovely woman named Lillian Thompson, and they spent a lot of time together. She made him feel more alive then he had in years, and they went out drinking, dancing, and having a good time. He was finally feeling happy.
Lillian turned out to be a vampire, of course, and she had found in Jacob someone who could keep up with her intellectually and make her feel alive. As time wore on, she felt that she had to preserve this intelligence for all eternity. She requested permission from the Prince to Embrace, it was granted, and she did.
Ironically, the Embrace restored more life to Jacob then he had felt before. He saw the world in ways he never had before (in large part due to his Mekhet Blood imbuing him with the Auspex Discipline), and he felt like he could do whatever he wanted. As time wore on, a little bit of that began to fade away as he realized that he was now trapped in this city, unable to go do his research in the field, unable to go anywhere, really.
Jacob was undeterred by this, and asked a friend to run his dig for the upcoming field season in his absence. He then told the school board that he would be teaching fewer classes, specifically only those that met at night. Since night teachers were difficult enough to find, they didnt really argue.
One of the first major problems he ran into was with his sire, who had thought he would logically join her in the Carthian Movement. Jacob, however, didnt care about politics. He was still a scientist through and through, and he saw more ways to study people now that he had all eternity and supernatural powers to do so. The Ordo Dracul drew him like a moth to a candle.
This sparked an argument with his sire, who finally got fed up and told him she was leaving town, and she hoped when she came back he had wisened up to the way things are. That was two months ago. He has since become an official Slave in the Ordo Dracul, and shows no regret for the path he has chosen, becoming quite obvious around town as a face most people recognize and know. He wears his dislike of politics and his neutrality on his sleeve, and is pleased to deal with just about anyone, provided they give him the same respect.
The Ghoul Incident
Two ghouls appeared in Centennial Park a while ago, creating quite a stir. All the Kindred wanted to know who they were, how they seemed to know about Kindred, and far more importantly, what was going to be done about them. Leticia Morales, a Daeva Crone, had been saying that they should try and bind the ghouls, as one was pregnant, and try to avoid spilling blood. Most others just wanted them killed. Jacob decided that he would watch how things unfold, to see how the partisan politics played out, and how the city as an entity watched out for its own and cleaned up its own messes.
As time went on, however, he became more and more troubled by the willingness to just kill these two. Finally he learned that a Lancea Sanctum strong-arm named Preacher was planning to kill them and just be rid of it. On Christmas Eve he broke his neutrality and told Preacher to give him one week before there was any bloodshed. In that week Jacob planned to get those two bound. Leticia had bought the ghouls a motel room for Christmas, so they'd be warm and dry, but they had refused to take it. Jacob went to talk to them as they showed up at the park, hoping that if he could talk to them alone, without Preacher or another threat nearby, they'd listen to what he said.
Unfortunately, he underestimated the desperation of the ghouls. Once he had them alone in an alleyway, they attacked him, one stabbing him through the heart with a knife, and as he fled, his Beast overtaking him, the other shot him in the back and he fell into torpor. The ghouls slaked their thirst for vampire blood on him, then made a clean escape, leaving him in the middle of the street. Luckily for him, Madam Deidre Skye had been following the ghouls, and thereby Jacob, with her Obfuscate powers. She called for a car and brought him to Madam Jessica Vandercamp's workshop, where they bound him with strong ropes and poured their blood into his mouth to awaken him and let him heal. By now it was the wee hours of Christmas morning, and as his present they let him go with minimal payment in boons, knowing that the weak bond of their blood and the much stronger bond of their kindness had created a powerful ally for them.
Jacob found Leticia beside herself, feeling responsible for what happened. Though she had formerly been very closed off to everyone, she opened up to him, and the beginnings of a romance were born.
Jacob vowed never to let his personal feelings cloud his judgment again. He vowed never to contaminate another experiment, another observation. Through the force of his will he kept the scar over his heart, to remind him of the price of failure, the price of contamination. His role is that of the observer, and he now knew the consequences of forgetting that.
The Dragons
The ensuing weeks were a nearly unceasing series of trials for Jacob. He began working in earnest with Philosopher Gottlieb on his progression within the Order. He got a tattoo, improved his memory, began meditating regularly, spent a series of days staying awake, learned Latin, and begin learning Arabic. Finally, his most difficult challenge came.
Philosopher Gottlieb asked him to "change his soul". He pondered several nights about what exactly that meant. He finally concluded that it meant to change the way he viewed the world and therefore adopt a new moral code, which he summized was the outward manifestation of the soul. He resolved to kill a man.
The murder itself went off flawlessly, even if it was almost entirely influenced in its planning and execution by movies he'd seen. He even took a cue from Fargo in the disposal of the body. When he came back to Gottlieb, he was informed that he was to follow up on the after-effects with the subjects family, work, and life.
The War
Things progressed relatively well for Jacob as time went on. He didnt have any realy enemies, and a few friends among most of the covenants. He progressed slowly but methodically towards his first Coil, and everything seemed to be going well.
Then, with little warning, a couple of new Carthians come to town. These werent just any Carthians - they had a reputation at Invictus killers. The Invictus obviously had a cow and called it an act of war and demanded their expulsion from the city. The Carthians told the Invictus, in so many words, to go fuck themselves. War broke out. Jacob, realizing that his haven was known by several Carthians and Crones, decided that it would be best to not be there for a while. He went to his office at the school and hunkered down until he heard that most of the shooting had stopped.
The war turned out to be rather quick. The Invictus lured the majority of the Carthian Movement and the best fighters of the Crone into a trap, and killed them all, including Leticia. Then the Seneschal, Veronica Parks, declared herself Prince and ordered all the remaining Carthians to lay down their arms. The city settled down again, for the most part.
During his time in hiding, one of his students began seeking him out more actively. She was a bright kid, and one that he had high hopes for. He took her out to coffee and began to get to know her, and by the end of the night she had drunk from his wrist. He impressed upon her the need for secrecy, and told her he would call her the following night.
He did indeed call her, and she came over. They talked for a couple hours about what he was, how he could help her, and what her role in all this is. He showed her that she was to be his student, and that he would open her eyes to the Mysteries of the Night. Her budding interest in the occult meant she gladly accepted the knowledge offered (and a second drink), and he gained an assistant, a companion, and a protegé.
