Human Years
Australia
A reserved Asian girl, Sasha grew up in the '90s in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. In school, Sasha was a dedicated student, studying maths, English and science diligently, excelling in computer-related subjects. At home, she was an obedient daughter, which in most cases meant excelling in school and being respectful to her parents. From all outward appearances Sasha was going to join the ranks of immigrant Asians in graduating from high school and University before contributing to society by joining the white-collar workforce of Victoria.
Taking extra-curriculum classes, Sasha honed her theatrical skills, boosting her self-confidence through donning the mask of the characters she was asked to portray. On-stage, Sasha found the passion that was missing in her life.
It was at the urges of her teachers and friends that Sasha applied for a Theatrical Arts course in the Victorian College of Arts. Much to her family's horror, Sasha was accepted.
Sasha's family had very traditional upper-middle class values and they abhorred the idea that their daughter was to continue such "frivolity" in University.
"A hobby's all well and good," Sasha's mother said to the school's career counsellor, "but it's really time for Sasha to grow up and start thinking of her future."
Sasha jumped at the deal.
While in Uni studying computer science, Sasha did not neglect her love for the theatre. She participated in the student theatre group whenever her studies permitted.
It was in the student theatre group that she met John.
John was a fellow theatre group member whom Sasha admired immensely. Although of the same age, he had a presence and a self-confidence that shone on stage and drew every eye in the audience. When asked for the source of his presence though, John was hard pressed to explain. John told Sasha that it could be due to his training in kendo. He tells her that all martial arts, no matter what form, style or school, trains the mind and spirit. The audience might have been perceiving the effects of the training.
Caught in a crush-like admiration towards John, Sasha signed herself up for beginner's kendo at the Uni's kendo club. Although nothing ever came to be between the two Sasha did find that kendo helped her, even if it was just to build some stamina and body co-ordination. Kendo practice every evening and regular attendance to the dojo at Uni was added to her daily regime.
United States
Four years and a Science Degree later, Sasha headed to Carrollton, Georgia to begin the Theatre Arts Program at the University of West Georgia.
The three years at the University of West Georgia not only polished Sasha's hidden talent on stage, it helped her understand herself more. Away from the influences of her family, Sasha allowed herself to live more fully; to drink deeply the experiences offered to her as part of Uni life.
Sasha tried to support herself as much as possible, regardless of the money sent by her parents, by tutoring other undergraduates and working part-time at the on-campus coffee shop. These part-time jobs allowed Sasha to come into contact with the wide variety of people that makes up the campus population.
In time, her performances on stage became more solid and realistic. Sasha was able to draw upon her observation of other people when portraying the highs and lows of her characters and her characters became more passionate and engaging.
It was also during this time that Sasha met Nathan Davis...
