The Area
Hawthorn Point is the place where the rich and multi-millionaire new-moneys fled after the city riots. The island was zoned into multiple areas, fueled mostly by kickbacks to the local politicians and lavish multi-million dollar homes, condominiums and the sort of places they like to frequent soon followed.
Completely out of the price range of all but the super-rich occupants of Carcosa, the island soon began to develop it’s own nickname from the rest of the city’s occupants: Rat Island. Like rats from a sinking ship, the wealthy and affluent had fled and sequestered themselves from the troubles and despair they themselves had a major part in creating.
Where the rest of the city is touched by the icy fingers of squalor, Hawthorn Point is not. The road system is a silken, well-tended set of overlaying black ribbons of asphalt, encased by hand-fitted brick cobblestone sidewalks and brightly lit Victorian-style lamps. The street signs are even framed by intricate metal designs – a stark difference from the modern city skyscrapers and developments just across the bay.
The island itself is accessed by the Chesapeake Ferry, which comes every hour on the hour and takes about fourty minutes to ride across to the other side. For those in a rush, it is not wise to get caught on either side needing to go to the other.
Hawthorn Point has it’s own police volunteer task force that often take shifts off at the docking of the Ferry to unscrupulously profile people who don’t look as though they belong on Hawthorn Point. Thus, even the criminals working Rat Island have taken to wearing respectable clothing, and even in some cases personally delivering white collar drugs to the doorstep of their wealthy patrons.
