Nuts & Bolts

The Area

Fremont Street is a street in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is the second most famous street in the Las Vegas metropolitan area after the Las Vegas Strip. Named in honor of explorer John Charles Frémont and located in the heart of the downtown casino corridor, Fremont Street is (or was) the address for many famous casinos such as Binion's Horseshoe, Eldorado Club, Fremont Hotel and Casino, Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, Golden Nugget, The Mint, and the Pioneer Club.

Prior to the construction of the Fremont Street Experience, the western end of Fremont Street was the picture of Las Vegas that was included in virtually every television show and movie that wanted to display the lights of Las Vegas. The abundance of neon signs, like cowboy Vegas Vic, earned the street the nickname of Glitter Gulch. The street was closed to vehicle traffic in 1994 to begin the construction of the Fremont Street Experience.

Fremont Street dates back to 1905, when Las Vegas itself was founded. Fremont Street was the first paved street in Las Vegas in 1925 and received the city's first traffic light in 1931. While gambling was well established prior to being legalized, the Northern Club in 1931 received one of the first 6 gambling licenses issued in Nevada and the first one for Fremont Street.

Fremont Street Experience

The Fremont Street Experience is a pedestrian mall and attraction. It occupies the westernmost 5 blocks of Fremont Street and portions of some other adjacent streets. The attraction is a barrel vault canopy, 90 ft high at the peak and four blocks, or approximately 1,500 ft, in length. While Las Vegas is known for never turning the outside casino lights off, each show begins by turning off the lights on all of the buildings, including the casinos, under the canopy. Before each show, one bidirectional street that crosses the Experience is blocked off for safety reasons. Concerts, usually free, are also held on two sound stages. The venue has become a major tourist attraction for downtown Las Vegas, and is also the location of the Neon Museum at the Fremont Street Experience and the city's annual New Year's Eve party, complete with fireworks on the display screen.

The Fiefs of Glitter Gulch

Fremont

Allies Available: Society

Fremont Street was the original Strip, way back before the casino resorts started taking over. For a while it fell into disrepair, a sort of tawdry cousin of the new, fresh Strip until someone had the bright idea to take that tawdry, antiquated character and turn it into a show. Now with a new front in the way of the Fremont Street Experience the area once more draws tourists. The once tawdry is showcased as "vintage" or "original" Las Vegas and people pay good money to see old neon. Bars and restaurants with bars crowd both sides of the street, welcoming people to open air patios. People mingle in large groups and gossip flows freely, just like the booze. The atmosphere is loud, with ribald laughter punctuating the air as people forget their worries with 2 dollar shots. The unwary traveler can find himself caught up in the crowd, which sometimes moves like a riptide when the canopy goes dark and the light show begins.

Benefits

  • Level 1: The bright lights of the Fremont Street Experience awes even the most jaded of the World of Darkness’ denizens, but not you. While others are taking in the sight of the lights, singing and dancing, you know the best times to give you an advantage due to the distracting light show. When in possession of this Fief, characters experience one less humanity penalty. This means that characters with humanity 4 (-3 dice) will have a -2 penalty when dealing with mortals. This affects no other aspects of humanity.
  • Level 2: The tourist mecca of the Fremont Street Experience makes for crushing crowds at times and a near barren wasteland other times, depending on the time of the night. Your pulse on the regular comings and goings gives you an edge while handling your business in Las Vegas. Once per week you may make any domain roll with the 9-again rule.

Fremont East

Allies Available: Fiscal

Fremont East is what they call a "mixed use development". It consists of retail space, restaurants, office space and living areas. For those determined to live among the glitter of casinos, this is the easiest and most affordable (relatively speaking...) place to do it. Condominiums are sold above office spaces, boutiques and restaurants. Signs hang out over the wide sidewalks advertising businesses, but more than a few of the spaces are empty and dark even when every thing else is lit up. Built just before the economy crash, many of the units were never leased giving an empty, if not run-down, air to the few blocks the development covers. Despite this emptiness the development continues to make money, if for no other reason than the ever eternal hope that things will get better and that real estate is an "investment." Those tourists who venture this far are more explorers than sight-seers and they're rewarded for their audacity with some of the more affordable shopping Las Vegas has to offer.

Benefits

  • Level 1: The flushing of money into redevelopment of the Fremont East area is not without it’s benefit for those who are seeking it. Business creation has it’s Resources merit Requirement lowered by one; furthermore each Business created pays +1 dot per month. .
  • Level 2: With the increase of development comes the need to offload other properties at a slightly reduced rate to those who’ll handle the necessary repairs and sell the properties at a higher price. You have access to special contacts working out of Fremont East which gives you the ability to expedite assorted paperwork in dealing with real estate. This means that locating rolls for havens take 30 minutes downtime instead of the usual 1 hour. In addition, any haven moves are done in 10 hours, not 25. Finally, havens or haven equipment can be purchased for -1 cost once per week.
