Beginning of the Game Information
One thing that everyone can say about Prince Duquette is that he has a carefully cultivated image. His praxis seizure in 1983 - the "Bloodless Coup" that he so often refers to when pointing out his benevolence and leniency, was likely everything but. After all, two nights before the praxis seizure, the infamous "Butcher of Atlanta" disappeared, and Prince Whitaker disappeared under similarly suspicious circumstances.
Of course, there are other rumors about images that Duquette has cultivated since his arrival in Atlanta. Despite his professed egalitarianism, some wonder whether or not he actually believes in the equality he espouses. After all, Kindred society is inherently unequal – could someone really hope for some sort of equality between the Kindred? There are other rumors, of course – that the Prince is a racist, that the Prince hates Christians, that the Prince is faking his education, that the Prince is an Invictus puppet to pacify the Carthians, that the Prince is in league with the Dragons, that the Prince is a serial diablerist, that the Prince ran one of the largest gangs in his home city, that the Prince didn’t really kill “The Butcher” and is always looking over his shoulder.
The maddening thing is that there’s no real proof that could validate any of these rumors. Even a Kindred that claims to have finally discovered “the truth” about Prince Duquette could just be feeding the rumor mill for her own devious purposes. Thus, the Kindred of Atlanta have only the Prince’s carefully-crafted image to rely on: that the Prince is a self-made man, that the Prince is educated and believes in a more enlightened government than feudalism, that the Prince does his honest best to treat each Kindred equally, and that the Prince honestly cares about the welfare of his city and was moved to stage his “Bloodless Coup” by his concern for the plight of Atlanta.
Prince Duquette is an emotional Kindred, most likely because of his Daeva blood. He is blunt, wears his emotions on his sleeve, and can be terribly intimidating when he needs to be. Although he tries to remain civil, the passion in his blood is too much to ignore, and nothing incenses him quite like tradition-breakers. Some call the Prince’s emotional honesty “refreshing,” but others say it is a sign of immaturity or poor upbringing.
Prince Duquette is a member of the Carthian Movement through and through, and while his princely duties sometimes keep him from spending more time with the Movement (which causes occasional grumbling), he seems to honestly believe in their views and does his best to rule his city as a “Carthian city” via his “enlightened government.” Although he does his best to remain active in the Movement, participation is key to the Carthians, and some of his hero status is beginning to fade.
