An Extraneous Overview

The Childer of Diomedes is an Eastern United States familial line of Ventrue that is pocketed in the state of Virginia from Richmond to Carcosa. There seems to be no direct ethnicity that courses through the line’s blood, especially in the modern nights, but also has there never been a negro or modern-night African American embraced into it either. This may or may not be intentional, but is not common knowledge either way. However, the eldest and most influential members are predominantly Caucasian – but it could be a direct representation of situational demographics (particularly in the years in which they were embraced).

Those who take part in the affairs of Clan Ventrue (Status 2) would know of the nearby familial line, and it’s widespread participation in either the Ordo Dracul or the Invictus. Both lines value, above all, loyalty and restraint, but also they consider themselves hunters of the weak. Each member of the Childer of Diomedes is rumored to have to fight some wild creature to survive directly after their embrace. No Childer of Diomedes has denied this, either, but neither have they said either way openly.

The Familial Line, based in it’s eldest-state out of Richmond, has yearly gatherings. Travel is difficult for Kindred, so like their rumored embrace, those who cannot make the trip and are pruned - and the rest deem them unfit to continue the utterly Darwinian line.

Customs and Practices

The Embrace

All Childer of Diomedes must pass a horrible test minutes after their lives are stolen and then brought back anew. Most often, the fledgling is Dominated to sleep, embraced while asleep, and then deposited, naked, into some sort of an underground basement or cellar with only a small knife to aid them. When the childer starts to rouse, a wild animal – in the case of the Childer of Diomedes, almost always a wild boar – is released from restraints into the room.

Since boars are quite vicious, there have been more than a few fledglings who do not survive the encounter. Those who are torpored by the boar are set out to the sun the following day and never spoken of again – as if they never occurred. Those who survive are quickly brought into the fold and reprogrammed (Lordly words are not unacceptable for this, especially if the young fledgling is still horror-struck by his embrace).

The Hunt

Once every month or two the Childer of Diomedes that are together in a city organize a small hunt of a wild animal. They use only “traditional” hunting weapons – such as a hunting rifle or a bow and arrow and move on foot. Traditionally, the individual who kills the beast (that is, the killing shot) must partake of the eyes of the beast – which is supposed to lend luck and foresight to the Kindred.

Occasionally, those considered good acquaintances are asked to join in a hunt, and often are given the best equipment to use. It is still considered poor form to be the “lesser” hunter, however, and traditionally, the Childer of Diomedes are expected to win each hunt.

After the hunt (and the vampire barfing up the eyes somewhere), blood is partaken from generally Dominated vassals and it can become a social affair, talking of things in the city and recent events. Never is a “would-be” childe discussed – it ties into the traditional methods of embrace within the familial line.
