History

The 'Cathay House' Estate in Greendale is one of the more notable homes in Starkhorn Heights. Built in 1904 by a Dr. Woodson, this distinctive turn-of-the-century home was one of the areas earlier country estates. Situated on ten acres of ocean-side property on the western coast of the island, across the bay from Ferryway. Once a glorious country estate, it fell into disrepair after the grandson of the original owner mysteriously and suddenly vacated the home in the late 1960's. Over the years, the strange mansion began to garner the reputaion, by the locals, of being haunted or, at the very least, bad luck, after the family was stricken by a series of unfornate events. Left abanoned by the owners for the better part of three decades, Lily purchased the property from them in the late 1990's and began the slow process of restoring the old estate - a process that is now almost complete.

Overall Description:

The buildings look much as they did when first constructed over a century ago. They all have a distinct Asian theme in the design, lending to the name of the estate. The original construction is primarily solid red brick walls, red tiled roof, and white trim and with few exceptions, has been carried on in the restoration. The property consists of the main building, a separate carriage house, a wooden boat house by the shore and extensive gardens behind the main house.

The Main House

The main house is an interesting piece of turn-of-the-20th-century architecture. While the solid red brick walls are not out of the ordinary, the white trim and Chinese red-tiled roof gives the Cathay it's name. The three-story building boasts 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, a billiards room, a 2-story atrium at the main enterance, numerous patio-veranda-porch areas, and a 3rd floor meditation room / observation area with a panoramic view of Ferryway across the bay. There is also a large basement area that is used for storage, a wine cellar, and "other" uses.

The Carriage House

The carriage-house is a separate two-story, two-car garage with a small two-bedroom apartment above it. It is constructed in the same manner as the main house (red brick, red tiled roof, Chinese influences). Currently, it is used as servants' quarters.

The Boat House

The boathouse is the newest building on the property, built by Lily after the purchase. It's wooden frame construction is modeled on a Japanese design. The lower level can hold two speed-boats with additional docking outside. The second level is a roofed-over, screened-in deck with a view of the bay.
