Carcosa is the most populous city in the state of Virginia and has been since the 1810 census. The city sits five feet above the water line, making it not as prone to flooding as it’s Western sister-city, Richmond. There are dozens of streams and creeks that flow down to the inlets on the Chesapeake Bay, next to which the city rests.
According to the July 2008 Census, the city of Carcosa has a population of 10,987,429. In less than a decade, Carcosa has added over a staggering 2,400,000 people, which has been a trend since 1960. The racial makeup of the city is 34.73% White, 21.46% Black, 20.92% Asian, 19.11% Latino and 3.78% other.
Experts have suggested that if the population continues to grow as it has over the past fifty years then by the year 2020 it will surpass New York City in population.
The downtown and heart of the city covers nearly 300 square miles but the entire Carcosa census area covers 3,781 square miles. Carcosa is second only to New York City in population density on the East Coast with approximately 2,900 people per square mile. It’s estimated that over 70% of Carcosa’s citizens live within the heart of the city, giving the center of the city a population density of over 25,000 people per square mile.
The median household income in Carcosa is $41,987, however it’s estimated that approximately 31% of the city lives below the poverty line. The income ranges in Carcosa show a disparity greater than even in its northern cousin, New York City, with the top 1% of the population making over 5,000,000 in yearly wages.
Carcosa also has the smallest amount of green spaces in a city this size as established by the 2005 Survey of American Cities and Parks. In the 300 sq mi are of the city center less than 1 sq mi is dedicated to park lands. In the extended metro area however, Carcosa shows amazing diversity in its green spaces which include Marigold Botanical Gardens, Papal Forest and Martin Causeway. Martin Causeway is of particular interest to environmentalists as it’s believed to house the last species of gray-chested waterfowl in the United States.
Around the Bend
The Consilium, empowered by their quest and success of finding and finishing off the plague-bringing coterie of Kindred, gained enough ground to become the supreme law of the city of Carcosa. With such, in order to keep types from mingling and fighting, they partitioned off the city into districts for each major group of Supernaturals represented in Carcosa. There are some areas, though, that the law of the Consilium just doesn’t extend. The Barrens, as they’re colloquially known as a group, are areas of Carcosa that are either horribly violent or simply insidiously dangerous and everyone knows it. Generally, people don’t go into the barrens of Carcosa unless they absolutely have to...
