Cabbagetown (Nickname: Irishtown)

The Area

Like any port city on the Eastern coast of the United States, Carcosa was flooded with Irish immigrants during their great famine. During those days, the Irish were treated universally as trash and less-than-human, which was no different in Carcosa even then. The Irish were systematically pulled from ships, ID'd and then sent about their way only holding whatever small bags they brought with them. Often, groups of gangs would stand about at the docks, hurling stones and picking fights with the wearied immigrants, while politicians would stand about nearby offering hot soup and bread in order to try and muster the all-mighty power of the vote. Where the Irish settled was the most poorest areas of Carcosa, and by sheer numbers alone, they carved out what would be later written onto maps as Cabbagetown.

In the modern nights Cabbagetown is a little more diversified, but the neighborhood is still considered ethnic and around eighty percent of the populations living within the boundaries are of Irish descent. Irishtown is also known for having it's own form of justice - and rarely are the Irishtown police precinct called in to handle skirmishes here in this part of Carcosa. Sure, fights happen, drunken brawls happen too, but overall, Irishtown is actually one of the safest areas of Carcosa, which is quite a feat for a city boasting a population over ten million strong.

The area runs the gamut between run down and near-glamorous. On the northern side of the neighborhood, the vacated lots and prostitution is rampant enough to be a very visible problem, but it all seems very... condensed. The telephone poles are covered with paperings of various offers and advertisements for live shows of local bands, payphone telephones are graffiti'd and the tall buildings hosting thousands of people look decrepit and unkept. But, on the southern side of the neighborhood, the Irish are attempting to mimic the Victorian theme of Hawthorn Point. Pavement and asphalt is better tended, and there are patches of cobblestoned sidewalk in front of some of the nicer businesses and entertainment spots. Cabbagetown has even managed to get it's own minor league baseball team: The Fightin' Irish. Unoriginal, but it's theirs, and they are quite proud of it.
