If a single word can be used to describe Boston, one of the oldest cities in the United States, it would be “stagnant”. Nothing ever really seems to change or grow or thrive in Boston, yet somehow that also seems to suit the residents just fine. The largest city in New England, Boston is regarded as entire area’s unofficial "Capital of New England" for its economic and cultural impact. This, however is a façade the residents are more than happy to perpetuate by boldly boasting of the major historical events that occurred there (The Battle of Bunker Hill and the Boston Tea Party) or the host of “firsts” (such as America’s first public schools or the first subway system in the United States), relying instead on the achievements from the city’s distant past.

The city proper has grown slowly in size since its founding in 1630, slowly swallowing up the surrounding area to become the anchor of the much larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, through land reclamation and annexation. Yet for all of its power and reputation as a center of higher education, medicine, and finance, with its many colleges, universities, and research centers, it is still very much a city divided into ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ – with an almost non-existent middle-class. Old money versus the working poor, with an overall apathy that effectively resists any change whatsoever.

The police are still crooked, the Irish mafia still holds a death grip on the underworld, their sports teams still sell out seats no matter how poorly they perform, and the fetid stench of Boston Harbour still hangs over the city like a shadow.

Kindred of Boston

Boston has been an Invictus-held city and has been since almost it's founding. The other covenants have waxed and waned in power to try to rival for the lower positions on the totem pole, and for most of the city's history, the second spot was firmly occupied by the Lancea Sanctum. But, in the past century, however, a failed praxis bid and demands to have control over more than just the spiritual concerns of the city’s denizens have seen the Spear spiral far from grace – to the point where they are now join the Carthian Movement as the smallest minorities.

The city is ruled by a triad Dynastic House, and has been that way since the late 1800’s. Before that, the eldest of House (currently in Eclipse) ruled alone as Prince dating back to his successful Praxis takeover a hundred years before that. House Olivae consists of the sleeping founder and his childe, both of the corpulent Macellarius line, and third Ventrue.

The Ordo Dracul now currently sits at the right hand of the Estate, and has for decades, although this position is constantly being tested by strong Egyptian-centric Acolyte cult, led by an ancient and enigmatic Mekhet. The Lancea and Momement membership in the city is nominal, and have been forced to work together for self-preservation, but this is tenuous at best.

Reflecting the city itself, change amongst the Kindred population is painstakingly slow in Boston, as those is power seem to throw everything towards maintaining the status quo. Stagnation almost seems to be the desired collective goal among the Kindred population. In part, this is because they are ever-aware of the dangerous underbelly of the city itself: mages, mortal secret societies, Indian burial grounds, and a founding history based on blood, death, and revolution have made Boston city rife with hunters and haunted dark spaces. Kindred here who move too quickly often disappear.
