Dossier on Arkadi Romanescu

note stapled to file

The attached file is a stub / addendum to the file on J.N. Adams, a subject in my efforts to ‘chase the tail’. Doctor Romanov was my subject’s therapist and after cursory study, bared the need for further investigation. In my efforts to further study this individual’s background, I was ‘politely’ requested to drop further inquiry by fellow august members of the O.D. in Bucharest. – W.J.

Dossier on Arkadi Romanescu

Dossier: Romanov, Arkadi Dragos; B.S., M.D., PhD

Born: Arkadi Dragos Romanescu; 1960; Bucharest, Romania

Height: 5’ 11” Weight: 180# Hair: brown (graying) Eyes: brown Distinguishing Marks: none known Bloodtype: O-negative

Speaks Romanian as his mother tongue, flawless Russian, and English fluently (although the latter with a thick Eastern European accent).

Only child of a Russian major in the Soviet army (Anatoli Petrov) and a Romanian nurse (Erika Romanescu). His father died before Romanov was born, was raised solely by his mother’s family and despite what one would assume as economic hardship in his youth, Doctor Romanescu and his family seem to have prospered well enough (possible unseen benefactors?).

Entered the University of Bucharest, in 1977, at age 17 to study medicine. Graduated in 1985 with dual degrees in Medicine and Psychiatry, with high honours. Note: It is believed that he is not only of above average intelligence, but from test scores in University and further study of his written notes and papers, the subject borders on genius.

There is the saying about genius and madness, and it appears that may be not that far from the truth in this case. It is my belief, through observation, that Arkadi Romanov is, in the least, mildly narcissistic, prone to bouts of fixation (borderline OCD?), as well as being known to be somewhat mildly superstitious. I would not go as far as to say that he is deranged, but with coupled with the nature of some of his alleged ‘experiments’, it would be safe to conclude that he could easily be classified as ‘eccentric’, even by our Order's standards.

He left Romania in 1990, during the fallout of from the Romanian Revolution in the late Winter of 1989. Possible ties and or sympathies to the Soviet Party, Communism and / or the autocratic regime of the late Nicolae Ceauşescu are suspected, although this is doubtful as he was also a proponent of the teachings of Constantin Rădulescu-Motru. There is also rumours that some that some of his earliest work at a Bucharest asylum for the criminally insane was of a rather perverse nature that was often overlooked by those in power.

Upon arriving in America, and after altering his surname from Romanescu to Romanov, for either personal or professional reasons, the doctor accepted a position as a resident psychiatrist at the Atlanta V.A. Hospital. There he has written several papers on the effects of traumatic stress on mass populations, a treatise on Personalism, 'electro-convulsive therapy', as well as papers on what he calls “neuro-surgical therapy”. There was also conjecture that he had also restarted some of his earlier ‘experiments’ on a few of his patients, but the investigation was stalled when none of them would step forward to testify. In fact, each one, down to a man, loyally stood by the doctor and his work. It was during this episode that I had a chance to observe Doctor Romanov directly and discovered that this loyalty may be unnatural. It appears during his tenure in Augusta, he has acquired a ‘patron’ of some influence.

Recently, he was transferred from the Augusta VA Hospital to the Atlanta VA Hospital to head the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team (PCT) Unit. It is suspected his ‘patron’ has also left Augusta, and may be the reason for his departure.

Sincerely, Adept William Johnstone; O.D., S.o.M.; Augusta Chapter

Coming to Atlanta

Arkadi relocated to Atlanta on the orders of his then regnant, an Invictus Daeva by the name of Richard Harris, to prepare lodging and other affairs for Mister Harris, who would be following behind. Impecably trained as a 'house ghoul', he set about the task immediately and waited for his regnant's arrival. Once completed, Arkadi nervously waited for a couple of weeks for his regnant to show up, however, that meeting never happened. A chance encounter with the city's Kindred finest, revealed that Harris had skipped town shortly after his arrival, leaving Arkadi alone, abandoned, and unsure of what he did to fail his regnant so. Unknown to Arkadi is that Harris' quick departure had nothing to do with him at all, but it has left him doubly determined not to fail so in the future.

The Kindred of Atlanta who found him in an upscale lounge were Arthur Fionte, Devon Jones and then Prince of the city, Bridget of Themesis. Knowing that his fate as a 'rogue ghoul' would mean his demise, he did his best to impress the Invictus Prince of his worth and in showing mercy, she 'gave' him to then then Regent Devon Jones.

DJ set several tasks out for Arkadi and each one was executed with surgical precision and the training Arkadi receivied as an Invictus ghoul, aided heavily by his fear of being abandoned again. One point that he has had some trouble adapting to, however, was his new regnant's 'style'. Being fairly strictly trained, Arkadi is not used to the 'freedom' under DJ's rule - being encouraged to partake in Conclaves and discussions with other Kindred, even to the point of fostering friendships with the 'Crewe' - is unerving to him, but slowly he is learning to adapt.

While he is polite, forthright and typically friendly and open as one so young, he does harbour his own secrets. One of the more interesting ones is a crush he has developed on another fledgling - a Ventrue Invictus neonate named Lisette Beauxhomme. He had met her by chance, in passing, when they were both mortals, as was stricken by her beauty. Unfortunately for Arkadi, he is fairly certain she does not even know he exists.
