Atmosphere: Wary
Rundown but safe neighborhoods, dive bars, and towns with failing industries all fit this descriptor. These environments have the same level of activity of Drowsy areas but are far less friendly and accommodating. The people in a Wary environment are on guard, though not against a specific group or activity. Folks here are too wrapped up in their own problems to pay attention to each other or to outsiders, and families and friendships exist only in the loosest sense of the word. Conversation is likely to be instigated only through charity (“Hey, can I bum a smoke? Thanks, man. I tell ya, with the factory closed down and that new tax on cigs, I can barely afford my fix these days!”), overlarge amounts of alcohol, or as a prelude to the occasional fight. Children are rarely out on the streets in these environments, and those who exist are wary and generally know how to take care of themselves… after all, no one else will do the job.
Description
Nestled between small restaurants, bars and clubs, along the border Boardwalk of the docks and Pepperdine Fifth Street Billiards appeals to the common man. The building front is plain, a mix of brick and wood. The sides are graffiti covered by local artists and regularly switch out because of the acceptance of the ownership to allow graffiti artists to work. It’s a smart move by the management, as they don’t have to worry about gang graffiti being the majority, and the graffiti artists mostly police themselves. On cooler nights the front door is propped open with a broken brick, on hotter night’s it’s closed to keep in the needed air conditioning.
The first thing a person sees upon entering is the pool tables. There are five lined up straight down the middle of the place, each with a light featuring some sort of beer slogan hanging over them. To the right of the entrance is the bar, which stretches half way down the room. Nestled in the back corner is a small arcade with about five games: two pinball machines, an obligatory gun game and two side scrolling street fighter types.
There’s always some sort of “classic rock” music playing, with Eagles and Pink Floyd being big hits. The music is often overlaid with the sound of bells and whistles from the pinball machines and punctuated with the clack and crash of billiards balls.
People don’t come to Fifth Street to settle down and have a beer, thus the only seating is located at the bar and only a few stools at that but they definitely don’t come for champagne. The bar stocks your basic necessities: bud, bud light, gin and whiskey. It’s not unusual though to see a group of women sitting on or leaning against one pool table while they watch men play at another. It’s hard to tell if they’re girlfriends, wives or hookers – the question of which is rarely asked, as it could quickly get you with a pool stick shoved in your face.
