New Option: Sites
Sites from hospitals and banks to whorehouses and chop shops are specific places with particular functions. These are where the manipulations of the Damned make contact with the world of the living.
“Get him back to the animal hospital before he bleeds out,” the Daeva shouts over his ghoul’s oozing body.
Sites allow your character to access certain benefits that would not normally be available as equipment bonuses purchasable for your character. Sites are various businesses and institutions open late enough to be manipulated by Kindred and with interest points for Kindred.
Sites are places of interest, which also makes them possible places of conflict for the Kindred in any given city. After all, controlling the fruits of the tree makes you the farmer, doesn’t it?
Controlling a Site is an extended and often arduous task. Sometimes, it can be frustrating if your Site is popular enough. While you maintain control, though, you can reap the benefits of the Site and utilize it in a time of need. Naturally, you can't use the benefits of a Site if you're not there, so there's never a time you could use more than one Site's benefit at the same time.
Gaining Influence over a Site [show/hide]
There are several ways possible to go about gaining control over a particular site. Maybe your character is a smooth operator that oozes charisma at every step onto the mortals. Maybe your character is a forceful genius bent on warping mortals’ minds and will to it’s own. Maybe your character is a brute ruffian who doesn’t take shit from shop owners and will take what it thinks is it's due, even if you have to kick their ass to do it.
With that being said, we’ve systemized the requirements for achieving a “tier” of influence in a specific Site. Each tier allows specific, unstackable benefits for that particular site. But first, here are the options you have to go about getting your character’s control over an institution. Rolls may be done once per week, per Site:
- Seduction or general Persuasiveness: Presence or Manipulation + Persuasion
- Threats of Violence or Aggression: Strength or Presence + Intimidation
- Intellectual Conversations and General Know-how: Intelligence + Socialize
- Note: It is possible to use disciplines that augment these traits, for instance, a character could use Majesty per normal, or Dominate per normal and use the same extended successes chart we use here.
Suggested Modifiers:
+1-5 – Status and Fame, as normal rules.
+1-3 – Character has the Domain merit in the area of the Site, positive dice are based on the Domain level.
+2 – Barfly merit (for Bar & Club Sites only)
+1 – Character has a Specialty that applies to the field of the institution (ST Decided)
Humanity – If Humanity Penalties apply to your roll, apply it.
-1 – Your character is utilizing a method of gaining influence that does not sit well at the Site (Intimidating at a police precinct, for instance, or Intellectual conversations at a rough and tumble bar)
-2 – Your character failed his initial roll to influence the Site
-3 – Your character has previously held, and subsequently lost influence in the Site
If not using a discipline roll, ghouls and other kindred may be used to teamwork (the type of influencing does not have to be the same).
Tiers of Influence:
Minor Influence: 10 successes gained
Sizable Influence: 20 successes gained
Uncontested Influence: 30 successes gained (may be influenced to a max of 50)
Only one character may be at each tier of influence in a Site at one time without triggering a Feud.
Seizing Influence (the Feud State) [show/hide]
Seizing Control from an Occupied Site can happen in a couple instances. The first instance of Feuds is the Standard Feud, which is where someone wishes to force their way into a Site against individuals who have the same tier of Influence in the site, or when two individuals are considered feuding because they are on the same Tier.
In a Feud state the rules change, slightly. Characters utilize the same basic rolls, dependent on their method of attempted take-over, but successes are pitted against each other.
Here is an example of a Feud situation:
Johnathan has 16 successes in the Regions Bank of Decatur, putting him at Minor Influence within the Site. Susan recently gained 2 successes on her roll to gain Minor Influence at the site putting her at 11 successes. Since there can only be one (cue Highlander) at the Minor tier of influence, this puts their next weekly roll as a “Feud”.
Johnathan gains 4 successes on his roll, while Susan gains only 2. Johnathan trumps Susan’s successes by 2, and her number of successes is depleted by two, to 9, while his is increased by two, to 18. The pair are no longer in the “Feud” status.
A Feud state generally ends when there is one remaining at the Tier in question, but that is not always the case. Feud-states can be initiated and kept for as long as necessary until one or more parties have their influence completely removed from that particular Site.
The second type of feuds are Declared Feuds, which is essentially when someone with influence in a Site chooses to try and force someone else out. The rules for this essentially are the same as the regular Feuds, however only characters with Minor, Sizable or Uncontested influence in a site may initiate a Declared Feud.
Renown [show/hide]
Sites have a 1-5 level of renown. In general, a level 1-2 renown place are smaller, less frequented and less known places, while 3 are pretty well known throughout the city. Places with renown 4 and 5 are major places, which are either known through the United States or even Internationally when one thinks of the Atlanta city.
Sites that have a renown rating of 1 or 2 can be influenced by anyone, however, Sites with renown higher than that require the Domain merit in the particular domain they are located within.
Renown 3 Sites require Domain 1 in the domain the Site is located in.
Renown 4 Sites require Domain 2.
Renown 5 Sites require Domain 3.
Notably, the amount of Sites you may influence is limited by your Resolve trait. Retainers may be utilized, but they are only considered “teamwork”, and may not roll to take influence themselves.
