Instruction (••)
Carlos looked over at Lindsey as she gazed off into space, probably dreaming about her Friday night date, no doubt. He let the minutes pass, and then when she finally set her head down on her desk, he casually walked over and picked up the largest dictionary he could find. The rest of the class giggled in anticipation. Carlos walked about five feet from the desk of Lindsey, raised the large Webster monstrosity over his head, and then dropped it to the floor. The heavy book made a thunderclap of a sound when it collided with the floor and Lindsey sat straight up in her seat, eyes wide. She immediately ran out of the classroom. Carlos turned to the rest of the class and then returned to the blackboard. Now, everyone was paying attention.
Prerequisites: Intelligence •••
Roll: Intelligence + Presence + Student's Intelligence - Level of Trait Taught +/- Mods;
(see below for rolling notes)
Modifiers
+2 - Student has Eidetic Memory or a similar merit, such as Mind of the Devouring Worm.
With this merit, you may teach up to your current level of any attribute, skill, merit or discipline your character possesses to other characters.
Teaching bonuses are rolled once every two weeks for students (regardless of how many teachers you may have, you may only make a roll for a grant of XP every two weeks - teachers may make as many rolls as they'd like for other, different, students) assuming that your character has been teaching another during this time.
Each success on this roll allows for one phantom XP to be saved towards the student character's purchase for that trait being taught. No willpower may be expended on this roll when learning from a mentor (though willpower may used when teaching other PCs). It should be noted that these phantom experience points may not exceed half of the actual cost of the Trait in question, rounded down if necessary (after all, the student has to actually be paying attention).
For example, Harold is teaching Kevin how to better conceal himself in order to shadow his prey more easily (Stealth skill). Harold has Intelligence 3, Presence 2, Stealth 3 and Striking Looks 2; Kevin has Intelligence 2 and Stealth at 1. After the two weeks of training, Harold makes a roll for teaching Kevin Stealth 2 with the following dice pool: Intelligence 3 + Presence 2 + Striking Looks 2 (1) + Kevin's Intelligence 2 - 2 for the level of the Trait = 6 dice. Harold rolls 2 2 9 3 4 8 - 2 successes - which grants Kevin 2 phantom XP towards his purchase of Stealth 2. Since Stealth 2 costs 4XP, he would not be able to save any more XP towards Stealth 2 from Instruction.
Please note, you can only be under one instructor (and gain bonuses) at a time. Also, you don't need to have Instruction to teach another character something, but having Instruction gives them a bonus.
Instructors can be also purchased for their time in training, these are NPCs, but follow the general guidelines of the aforementioned Instruction merit. Expertise of a tutor is reflected in their base dicepools for instructing (as well as how much they charge your ass for their wonderful services). Here is a chart of the level of instructors, how much they cost (which is per roll of instruction) and their dice pools, base:
